How Did David Powell Really Die?

On April 3, 2015 I closed a story about the Greensboro-Randolph Megasite by writing, "And rumors abound as to why David Powell of the Piedmont Triad Partnership is leaving town."

David Powell is the man who came up with the idea of starting the megasite and pitched it to Jim Melvin, Sam Simpson and others. David Powell skipped town accused of running off with $240,000 of money belonging to the megasite partnership.

But according to the Winston-Salem Journal it took the Greensboro Partnership over 10 months after my posting to report and charge Mr Powell.

"Powell was charged in January 2016 with two counts each of embezzling and obtaining more than $240,000 by false pretense from the partnership, which is the Triad’s main economic development agency."

Why did they wait so long?

I mean, if I knew it then his bosses had to know it, right? How the hell do you think rumors get back to me when I don't even keep company with the likes of Jim Melvin and Sam Simpson? While I recognize Melvin when I see him I wouldn't know Simpson if he bit me on the leg.

As reported by the Journal, David Powell was found dead over the weekend. Some are calling it suicide. Seems he fled to Wilmington, started using the name, Finley Powell, caused some financial issues at his father's business, the Throne Theater in Wilmington and the Feds finally found out where he'd been hiding. Or something like that.

You see, nothing is clear. Folks in the know around here were expecting his trial to take place in February of 2017. Powell should have already been tried.

And why the delay in charging Powell with the crimes? He actually left his Greensboro Partnership job in January of 2015, I got wind of his skipping town in April 2015, and it wasn't until January of 2016 that his bosses decided to press charges. He was scheduled to go to court in February 2017 but that never happened and in April 2017 he's found dead leaving behind a wife and 3 children.
And suicides don't get your family payments from your life insurance company.

Time for Melvin, Simpson and company to figure out how to cover up a few lose ends perhaps?

You are aware that Jim Melvin is the man who presided over the 1979 Klan/Nazi-CWP shootout, right? I'm not taking sides on that event suffice to say that 5 people who were known to be enemies of Melvin's financial backers were the only ones to die that day. He has a history that cannot be ignored.

And then there's Abner Doon who writes Jim Melvin should provide some answers, but no one in our for-profit press will ask.

Whole lotta names there, Abner, reckon any of them will talk? Reckon any more of them will die strange deaths?
