It's time for the Greensboro City Council to get their heads out of the sand. Thousands of workers locally including many in my own family are employed in the making of weapons, parts and machinery for the United States Military. Several of Greensboro's largest employers are weapons contractors and the jobs are among the most skilled and highest paying in the area. And now we learn the United States Air Force is grounding 1/3 of its fleet of combat aircraft effective immediately upon their return.
I've been waiting on this announcement for months. It's been common knowledge among the contractors that this was going to happen. I've known it since December. Locally, most have added shifts and employees to get as much product as possible out the door and delivered to Government stockpiles before late June or early July when the mass layoffs will start. Any discretionary spending on the part of local government should stop now and government had best be looking at ways to put this vast pool of technical and engineering talent to work ASAP.
Otherwise, all that money being spent at the technical schools is money down the drain.
I mean seriously folks, making various products for the US Military, everything from uniforms, furniture, to parts for fighter jets, M1 Abrams Tanks, Ships and even Trident nuclear submarines are all among the biggest and smallest employers in Greensboro and the Piedmont Triad. It's time we found something else for that talent to do, something sustainable, something that doesn't involve blowing up the world. And only government can provide that level of leadership on that scale.
When you're ready to set down and talk with me I have ideas but I'm not going to put them on the Internet for smarter cities to do first. Now if you'll excuse me I'm off to my garden.
