Police and Youth Protection Ordinance Help Maintain Nighttime Order DowntownGREENSBORO, NC (July 5, 2013) - Although there were some teen-related disturbances downtown after the Fun Fourth festival concluded, police were able to bring the disturbances under immediate control and maintain order throughout the night with relatively few problems. Police were aided by increased staffing and the new Youth Protection Ordinance.In all, six teenagers were charged with affray stemming from two incidents occurring before 10 pm. Three young men above the curfew age were charged with resisting an officer who was enforcing the curfew. And, only six teens were identified as violating the curfew. Four were warned and released to parents and two were issued citations and released to a parent.Approximately 50 Greensboro police officers were on hand to assist the public, manage traffic, and control crowds for the Fun Fourth Festivities. Police report that events associated with the Fun Fourth were incident free.However, at the conclusion of the scheduled events, young people began congregating in and around Center City Park, and caused approximately four disturbances in and around Center City Park and along Elm Street in a two-hour period. Police on bikes, foot, and patrol vehicles responded quickly to each incident and restored order with only one use of pepper spray to stop one person from fighting.Two 13 year-olds,onetwo 14 year-olds and one 15 year-old were arrested and charged with affray. XXXXXXX XXXXX XXXXXX, 17, of XXXX Tucker Street, was also arrested and charged with affray.Police contacted the parents of the juveniles below the age of 16, who came downtown to take custody of their children.XXXXX XXXXXX XXXXXX, 16, of XXXX Patriot Way, and XXXXX XXXXX XXXX, 16, of XXX Ireland Street, were issued citations for violating curfew and later released to a parent.Three adults were also arrested in connection with the disturbances. They were charged with resisting, delaying and obstructing a law enforcement officer who was attempting to enforce the provisions of the curfew. Greensboro· XXXXX XXXX XXXX, 21, XXXX Sunrise Valley Drive, GreensboroThe Greensboro Police Department maintains an increased patrol presence in the area for the remainder of the weekend, and reminds parents to ensure that they know and approve of the whereabouts of their underage children to protect their safety. Parents are responsible for ensuring that youth below the age of 18 are supervised by an adult when in the downtown between 11pm and 6am each day.
