Did The ICRCM Ever Try?

Margaret Benjamin is a vice-chairwoman of the Museum Trustee Association, based in Baltimore, Maryland. She also serves on the board of the Weatherspoon Art Museum, and is a past chairwoman of the board of Greensboro Historical Museum Inc. Previously she served as as public relations director for a museum in New Orleans. In her News & Record article, It’s not easy to become a first-class museum she writes:

"The centerpiece of a museum trustee’s fiduciary role is the annual audit, and the first question a potential museum trustee should ask before joining a museum board is: “Can I review your most recent audit?” She should check that the audits are up to date and on time. The most important museum board meeting of the year is the one when the auditor presents the annual financial statements and audit."

And yet the International Civil Rights Center & Museum has to be forced by the City of Greensboro to do an audit... Ms Benjamin also writes:

"I strongly recommend to the trustees of the International Civil Rights Center & Museum to reach out to other local museum trustees and staff for guidance, and to contact the AAM about eligibility to participate in an organizational assessment through the Museum Assessment Program. These measures are the best way to begin to improve museum governance and institutional credibility and to earn and retain the most valuable holding that a museum can acquire — the public trust."

It would appear the International Civil Rights Center & Museum never even tried...
