Rockingham County takes it on the chin; "MillerCoors to close Eden plant"; Expect economic reverberations in Greensboro's Guilford County

"MillerCoors announced this morning to its employees it plans to close its Eden plant by September 2016.

With 520 employees, MillerCoors has been one of the city's largest employers for 37 years...

...Two major suppliers are also likely to feel the impact.

Ball Corp., with 183 workers, makes all of the brewery’s bottles and cans and the Fleetmaster Express location in Eden is a major MillerCoors shipper.

...County Manager Lance Metzler released a statement that said all of the company’s employees were sent home for the day:

...Metzler said the brewery represents roughly $33 million of assessed tax value in real estate and $132.6 million in equipment.

Think about it Greensboro.

We just lost more than 1,000 jobs,
considering other jobs directly affected
and those indirectly affected.

...Craig Travis, vice chairman of the Rockingham County Board of Commissioners said in a text message, "we can survive but will have to cut departments and start eliminating some services."

...The plant closure and any related layoffs will add significantly to the roughly 3,000 people counted as unemployed in the July survey by the N.C. Department of Commerce’s Labor and Economic Analysis Division.

...Brands include Blue Moon seasonals, Coors Light, Miller Lite and Miller High Life..."
