"Greensboro’s War Memorial Auditorium is antiquated and in deplorable condition. It has served its purpose for more than 50 years but Greensboro needs a new performing arts center. It is a quality-of-life component that is needed to help make our city attractive to new business and industry and give our 270,000 residents another reason to be proud of our city."
Had the Greensboro’s War Memorial Auditorium not been under the Greensboro Coliseum Complex charter that forbids it from making any profit, there might have been enough money to build it anew. What Tom conveniently leaves out is the fact that Mayor Perkins plans to place the downtown performing arts center under that same set of rules. Tom continues:
"A study is being done to determine the optimal size and design of a new facility. The study also will estimate the economic impact of a new performing arts center. It will be interesting to see what is proposed, but in concept, I urge voters to support a new arts center if it is on the ballot this November."
A study that hasn't even considered the rest of Greensboro. And the coup de grĂ¢ce:
And, of course, it should be located in downtown to get the most bang for the buck!
The most bang for Tom, Mayor "Pave-it" Perkins and the rest of the corrupted downtown rent seekers. But what about East Greensboro and other working class communities-- what do we get for giving the Perkinites and Melvinites our hard earned tax dollars? Not enough jobs, too few cops, rising taxes and falling property values. Isn't it interesting how every one of these "experts" make the claim that downtown is the best location when in-fact, downtown is the only location being studied? What if they're wrong and nobody finds out until after our money is spent?
