In today's News And Observer there's a story about how companies like Red Hat and Citrix are picking Raleigh over Greensboro and how downtown Raleigh is getting private investments when cities like Greensboro are unable to attract private investors. And even though Raleigh did spend significant amounts of money downtown a decade ago that isn't way companies are moving there today.
So why are they coming?
In case you haven't noticed, in the Raleigh deals, the downtown developers got left out of the deal, thus making downtown more affordable to new business but here in Greensboro the developers have already swooped in and bought up the available properties. Hence we are left with 2 options: 1. Wait for the developers to go broke and sell at bargain basement prices-- the sensible approach, or 2. bail out the developers with taxpayers' dollars-- the approach preferred by Robbie Perkins and his cronies who happen to be the very same developers who bought up the properties.
Greensboro can decide which approach Greensboro wishes to live with but even those of us with half a brain know which works better over the long haul...
History is the best of teachers, learn it.
UPDATE: As Curious George points out in the comments below, Mayor Perkins prefers to do exactly the opposite as what is working in Raleigh.
