News & Record: Why not lift veil?

Today the News & Record asks a very important question about why the GPAC Task Force won't release the names of their doners.

"What’s not quite clear is why the private donors who have expressed interest in helping to fund the arts center won’t come forward. “We need some commitment from the council before we can actually go out and get those signed pledges (for private donations),” Ross Harris, who is managing the project, told the News & Record’s Amanda Lehmert."

The answer is pretty simple really. A few years ago, Greensboro's elites embarked on another big "public works" project and only one doner stepped up. Eventually the project was made private when Jim Melvin and the Bryan Foundation footed the bill for the downtown baseball stadium.

Before that there was a huge "public works" project pitched in which only the Koury Corporation was willing to donate. We were in the midst of economic good times then and no one else would help. Can anyone name it?

The answer is either: the people with the money see these ideas being pitched by people who they believe cannot possibly manage the projects or they believe the projects to be scams, nonsense, absurd pipe dreams. Or, perhaps the money was never there in the first place. After all, it was Rabbi Fred Guttman who made known to me that the $20 Million Dollars wasn't there when he informed me he had been assured it was only $15 Million.

Greensboro should give the rabbi an award as well. For saving our working class over $60 Million we cannot afford to pay.
