I realize that dilapidated old buildings are a problem for Greensboro but recent events have made me begin to question Mayor Perkins' efforts to clean up our city. I screamed as loud as anyone to bring back RUCO.
For starters there's the unreleased Action Greensboro Study that claims the costs of repairing downtown properties exceeds what the rental market can bare.
While at the same time the Mayor is threatening to force repairs on downtown property owners under the threat of taking their buildings away from them should they not be able to afford inflated bills from City staff.
Then there is a proposed $10 downtown parking fee that will no doubt cripple many Downtown businesses.
And last but not least, we now learn of legislation being pushed in Raleigh that would allow Greensboro to simply take properties away from their rightful owners.
Now like I say, as a rule I would be in favor of sprucing up our city but when I look at the history of Mayor Robbie Perkins, a man who stole the company he "owns" from his first wife's father, was sued for stealing $16,000 from his second wife's father, is a year behind on his child support and has embezzled $1.2 Million Dollars from the very bank where he was once a board member I cannot help but think, that to allow these actions to take place at this time, while Robbie Perkins remains in power, would simply be a disaster in the making.
