Hartzman’s for real ... and I ought to know

Stolen in its entirety from today's News & Record letters to the editor and posted here because the N&R has a nasty habit of deleting their online archives.

"I am writing in reference to the article “Vaughan-Perkins race will be worth the price of admission” (Allen Johnson column, April 28). I am requesting that useful information be presented to those who may cast ballots as it concerns one “gadfly/loose cannon/provocateur/candidate George Hartzman.”

Might I suggest that you also add that he is in favor of RUCO and fair housing practices, transparency of power and fair bidding on contracts with the city and term limits? Incidentally, it might be worth noting that he considers himself a fiscal conservative — a believer in not spending more then you make on things you might not need. Trust me, we go around in circles with this one at our house!

This man is also the proud father of two teenage daughters, has been married for 20 years — although he’ll swear that it’s only been 19 — and has helped to finance and house the rescue of 11 dogs and five cats from a variety of local rescue organizations.

Most recently he has sacrificed a stable income, company medical benefits and almost a marriage to uphold the duties of a system that has turned a blind eye in protecting the powerless against an all-too-powerful banking system.

I don’t always agree with George Hartzman, but at the end of the day, unlike a “loose cannon,” you know where he stands. Perhaps it’s a “gadfly” style that is required to change a status quo: “Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented” — Elie Wiesel.

How much you want to bet Mayor Perkin's wife DOES NOT endorse him?
