I recently wrote of carrying 3 kittens to the animal shelter and coming home with a chicken and when I turned on the local WFMY TV "news" this morning they were again pitching abandoned pets and touting the 600 pets they've helped place in homes. Well guess what, if our local politicians weren't dumber than the dogs, cats and chickens that end up in the Guilford County Animal shelter we could be placing far more animals in homes than ever before.
How's that? By putting the puppies, kittens chickens and other abandoned pets where the people are.
Think about it. How often do you make the turn on Animal Shelter Road to go to the Guilford County Animal Shelter? I went there to drop off 3 kittens about 3 weeks ago, before that was about 6 years ago when I had to have a 19 year old blind, deaf and crippled dog put down. It's just not the kind of place people go to unless they have reason to go there.
But people go to the mall, downtown and to shopping centers every day where they walk past the pet stores filled with puppy mill puppies and go, "Ah, he's so cute!" then rush in and buy it only to abandon it to the animal shelter a few weeks or months later.
No, this approach wouldn't make pet owners more responsible. Expecting that is like expecting politicians to make smart decisions without being goaded into doing so. But at least this way our tax dollars could be going towards making a dent in the puppy mill business with a little head to tail competition.
Come here, Commissioner! Time for your Scooby snack!
