Allen Johnson Wants To Know

In his blog post, We’re No. 1 ... in taxes?, News & Record Editor, Allen Johnson seems shocked that Greensboro is the highest taxed city in North Carolina. In the comments I asked,

"And you still think we can justify a tax increase to build a downtown performing arts center? Seriously?"

Bob Roach continued,

"Isn't it great we're finally ahead of Raleigh and Charlotte in something. And it will be a great recruiting tool when our beloved city leaders attempt to lure new companies to the Gate City. I'm sure business owners will beat a path to our door when they learn we are #1 in taxes. If we can only raise taxes for the performing arts center we'll be so far ahead of our neighbors to the east and west that they'll never catch up. My hat is off to Mayor Robbie Perkins for a job well done! We should all remember this achievement when the current city council asks for our vote later this year.

Allen then asked,

"The question isn't just the taxes themselves but why? What are they for and is it money well-spent?"

And I answer:

"When the constant drumroll from Greensboro leaders remains, we need to spend more to keep up with our pier cities the answer becomes pretty apparent, does it not?"

As to why I can't get my reply to display on the N&R thread? Perhaps Allen can answer that for you.

Here's an idea! Instead of wasting so much money on 3rd party studies that prove you wrong and paying millions out to "non profits" to do what the City should be doing for itself, why not save the money and reduce overall taxes as an incentive that really works to get businesses to come here and stay.

Geez, you people are dumber than a mud fence and every bit as hard to clean up after.
