Well, the GPAC crowd throws me a curve ball today. In today's letters to the editor we have a letter titled Arts center’s a chance to make city special but they don't really tell us who Larry Davis really is or what his real motives might be for promoting a downtown Greensboro Performing Arts Center.
Is this Larry Davis, Budget Director at City of Greensboro?
Is he Larry Davis of the North Carolina Highway Patrol?
Is he Larry Davis of Larry Davis Plumbing? Knowing that Larry Davis I highly doubt it but having not seen him in several years I can't really say.
Is it the Larry Davis of Rexham Corporation?
Is it the Larry Davis of Premedia Group LLC?
Larry, whoever he is, writes:
"Greensboro needs a performing arts center that will be another jewel in all that makes this city what it is. Why stop with the Greensboro Aquatic Center, Greensboro Coliseum, Center City Park, Natural Science Center or Downtown Greenway?"
Why do we need it Larry? Beautiful women don't need jewels to attract men? Jewels are in fact the female equivalent to trophies and animal heads mounted on walls saying, "look what I got." Or in the case of the animal head, "Look what I shot." Like a beautiful woman, a truly beautiful and wonderful city doesn't need a PAC to attract people, businesses or anything else it needs.
"I’m tired of hearing comments about the performing arts center catering only to the wealthy or being built for a very limited audience. The prices for sports events or concerts at the coliseum are not cheap tickets."
I'm poor, Larry. I haven't been able to afford a concert ticket or sporting event ticket in over 20 years. So yes, they're not cheap, but you've hardly made your argument that the PAC isn't catering to the wealthy. If anything, you've supported the argument.
"If done in the right way, this performing arts center would be available to a much broader audience than people realize, with events such as the Bryan Series, comedians, speakers, musicals, dramas, ballets, operas and symphonies."
What is the right way, Larry? So far this process has been entrusted to a bunch of people who have yet to figure out how to park the 1000 to 1500 cars that will show up for performances. Nor have they figured out a ways and means to pay for the building of the PAC much less the upkeep. Are we supposed to trust these same people to get it done the right way? Might I remind you that despite its appearance, 'if' is the largest word in the English language.
"Greensboro is missing the big picture. We were once the second-largest city in North Carolina and proud of it. Now we are third and moving toward being fourth behind Durham."
No Larry, you are missing the big picture. It's not about being bigger, never has been. Despite the brainwashing that the Bobblehead and other Aliens have been doing for over 50 years the big picture is about being the best, not the biggest. You seem to be confusing special with big-- they don't both mean the same thing. Get over your Charlotte envy or move there. And take the Bobblehead with you.
"Greensboro is being offered $20 million toward this project from private donors, and it would be a step backward if we miss this opportunity."
Again, show us the money, Larry. You GPAC cheerleaders have been touting this $20 Million Dollar figure for almost a year. Why did you stop at $20 Million? Why didn't you keep raising more money so that the burden on the working class would be less? Why not? Because, as Ross Harris admitted in front of the Greensboro City Council and was reported by the News & Record, the $20 Million Dollars in private donations does not yet exist. Why do you and the rest keep repeating the lie?
"Large corporations scouting for cities look at all the assets a city has to offer. As it stands now, we would probably lose out to Charlotte, Raleigh or Durham."
Large corporations will not care about a PAC if our schools are bad and our streets unsafe. Case in point: Detroit, Michigan where over a dozen PACs are located and large corporations are leaving in droves.
