Requests to Hire Off-Duty Police Now On-Line

GREENSBORO, NC (April 24, 2013) – Business and organizations wishing to hire off-duty Greensboro police officers can now  submit their requests through the police department’s website.

“Before this on-line system went live, potential employers had to call the police department and one of our employees completed a telephonic interview to get the details of the requests,” explained Capt. John Wolfe, Commander of the Special Operations Division. “This method just wasn’t as responsive or accommodating as we wanted it to be. We figured there had to be a better way to meet the needs of our potential customers.”

The on-line application meets those needs by being accessible 24 hours a day, and ensuring all the information needed to fulfill the request is provided.

The on-line process begins by visiting www.greensboro-nc.gov/HireAnOfficer.  Potential employers will complete a brief auto-fill form that is submitted to the police department’s Secondary Employment Coordinator once complete.

The Greensboro Police Department recognizes that making police officers available to private employers for security purposes provides an additional level of crime prevention, a reduction in calls for service, and a relationship with the community that is mutually beneficial to all participants.

The GPD processes about 1500 requests for secondary employment each year and staffs many on-going assignments totaling about 100,000 hours of additional police presence in our city.

Officers working for private employers must conform to all laws and GPD policies. They will take appropriate action to enforce the law and preserve public safety; however will not enforce rules and regulations of an employer which are not violations of the law.

The City has established a fee payment schedule based on the number of officers needed.

More information can be found in Departmental Directive 3.3 at www.gsopd.org or by calling GPD’s Secondary Employment Coordinator at 336-373-2121.
