Historical Museum Accepting Nominations for 2013 Voices of a City Award

GREENSBORO, NC (April 9, 2013) The Greensboro Historical Museum, Inc. invites nominations of an individual or organization for the 2013 Voices of a City Award, an honor recognizing significant and original contributions to local history. Nominations will be accepted through July 1, 2013 on behalf of individuals and organizations.

Projects can be as varied as our city, including oral history projects, photography, film, student research, published articles, books, film, electronic media, etc. Collectors of historical documents or artifacts are also eligible, and self- nominations are welcome. Submissions by high school and college students will be judged in a separate category.

Previous honorees include historian Gayle Hicks Fripp and the J. C. Price School Project, a partnership with Greensboro College and the Peeler–Swann Family Association.

Nominations should include a letter and at least one example of work for consideration, provided in both hard copy and CD/DVD format. Submissions will be evaluated by the Historical Museum’s Community Advisory Board on criteria including: project originality and significance; innovation; quality of research within current academic scholarship; sources consulted; and accessibility to Greensboro community and beyond. The announcement and award presentation will be made at the museum’s membership dinner in the fall.

STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT WATER AT ANNUAL WATER FESTVIAL EVENT

GREENSBORO, NC (April 9, 2013) – The City of Greensboro Water Resources Department and the Parks and Recreation Department will play host to area fifth graders as part of the annual “Water Festival,” Wednesday, April 10, 2013 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Bryan Park /Lake Townsend Marina/ Townsend Water Treatment Plant, 6275 Bryan Park Road, Browns Summit. Students from the Guilford County and local private school systems will have the opportunity to participate in eight fun and exciting hands-on water related activities.

Representatives from city, county, and state government, along with students from Walter Hines Page High School NJROTC Program, and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro Department of Recreation, Tourism, & Hospitality Management Program, and Department of Teacher Education and Higher Education will be available to provide assistance at the event. Greensboro Sportsplex to host Active for Life Senior Resource Fair on Thursday, April 18

GREENSBORO, NC -- (April 9, 2013) -- The Greensboro Sportsplex and Senior Resources of Guilford will host the Active for Life Senior Resource Fair from 9:30 am to 2 pm on Thursday, April 18. This free event is open for seniors, individuals with disabilities and their families to explore wellness opportunities available in Greensboro. The fair will highlight the new partnership between the Sportsplex and the Adult Center for Enrichment that created “The ResFit Club” along with information from local vendors and community resources that promote active senior lifestyles. Participants will enjoy breakout sessions from The ResFit Club, SeniorLine and the Sportsplex, high and low impact fitness demonstrations such as Zumba, chair yoga, self-defense and Add Health to Our Years (AHOY) exercise program.

Federal Place Closed for Grand Opening of Police Headquarters

 GREENSBORO, NC (April 9, 2013) –Federal Place will be closed between McGee Street and West Washington Street April 15th from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in support of the Grand Opening of the Greensboro Police Department Headquarters.

            Parking will also be prohibited during this time.
