They would make progressive ideas work cheaply enough to keep conservatives happy. You see, as a liberal I've made it a point to spend the last year engaging local conservatives in such a way as to find out what it is they're willing to support and for the most part, when it comes to local issues, most local conservatives aren't against progressive ideas, they're against what they believe is out of control progressive spending.
By the same token, most local liberals tell me that in today's economy, everyone has been forced to become a fiscal conservative no matter what your social beliefs. Like most local conservatives, local liberals believe the problem isn't the cost of progressive ideas, the problem is corruption-- just like everything else in Greensboro government.
Why do you think the city continues to fight transparency if not for corruption?
On the local level, conservatives want what liberals want: jobs, prosperity, lower taxes, equal rights, equal pay, an end to discrimination, safe homes and streets, good educations for their children, good roads, opportunity... you know, the American Dream. I've spent the last 2 years networking with local liberals and conservatives from the entire political spectrum and the one thing I've noticed is with the exception of those who are motivated only by greed, the rest of us aren't that far apart and are ready, willing and able to work together to make progressive ideas work cheaply enough to keep conservatives happy. That is, if our "leaders" cared enough to make it happen.
After all, you can't remove toxins simply with dilution. You have to clean the entire well.
