I’ll dispense with the mayor-elect’s glaring lack of leadership and focus on the realities of improving High Point Road and Lee Street. Wonderful things have been done in this area to provide resources for the poor at the end of Lee Street as it approaches downtown. And currently, a beautiful new facade is being put on the front of the shopping center at Florida Street. Unfortunately, a facade is all these efforts at improvement are. We need to recognize that in addition to the usual foot traffic of panhandlers and the homeless, there is a whole generation of kids coming up who will never have a job.
