The Future Of Logistics In Greensboro

Greensboro's elected leaders are still pushing Piedmont Triad International Airport and logistics as the future of Greensboro. Here's a video shot at the UPS logistics center in Louisville, Kentucky. It's cute... until reality sinks in:

1.6 Million Packages per day, a jet plane lands every 90 seconds and each package touched by human hands only twice....

Are you folks in west Greensboro going to be happy with a jumbo jet landing every 90 seconds? Every minute and a half all night long seven days a week? That's what Greensboro's leaders and economic development "gurus" are aspiring to. I'll hardly notice over here in Bessemer but then I'll not derive any economic benefit either.

And if machines are doing all the work of sorting all those packages then what kinds of jobs will logistics bring? Truck drivers. Lots and lots of truck drivers driving lots and lots of great big tractor-trailers, many pulling double trailers choking all of Greensboro's major thoroughfares day and night until they all finally make their way to PTI while you have to share the roads with them.

You see, before I became what I am today, I was for 28 years, a truck driver, driving those big rigs, pulling those double trailers to airports, ports and warehouses across these united states, Canada and sometimes even Mexico. I know exactly what logistics entails and logistics is always a nightmare-- especially for those who have to live with logistics.

If you want this nightmare to end then please share this post with everyone you know and keep checking back at this blog where I continue to offer sustainable economic development alternatives to the status quo.
