Tonight, Greensboro Mayor Nancy Baracat Vaughan will introduce a resolution to City Council that proposes new voluntary disclosure rules for the Greensboro City Council members. The new disclosure form will include the following voluntarily information from council-members who already have a history of not complying with the existing, less reviling voluntary disclosure rules:
Real estate assets worth more than $10,000.
Property rented to or leased from the city .
Financial interests in public or private businesses. If any such business have any dealings with the city, the form requires more details.
Nonprofit organizations they may be connected to as an employee, board member, officer, contractor or lobbyist.
Any organization or advocacy group they were a leader of, if the organization has “an interest pertaining to subject matter areas over which the City Council may have jurisdiction."
If the Greensboro City Council can lobby the NC Legislature on behalf of TREBIC and the removal of RUCO minmum housing standards-- and council did exactly that-- then the least they can do is lobby the State Legislature for disclosure laws with teeth as Mayor Vaughan's proposal provides no penalties for those who fail to comply. Anything less is unacceptable.
