“We are no longer interested in the proposed site in Greensboro, and we are not interested in any other sites in Greensboro at this time,” said Alison Mochizuki, Trader Joe’s spokeswoman, in an email to The Business Journal. “Instead we are focusing our attention on sites in other cities around the country.”
So what excuse will developers use now to convince the Greensboro City Council for the need for rezoning?
"We don’t get in the middle of political battles or discussions about zoning … we sell groceries," Mochizuki said in an email."
I'm waiting to see how the developers twist this over the course of the next 2 weeks.
Update: Someone in the know weighs in:
"Next Week’s Friendly Avenue rezoning may have more to do with a drug store deal than a site for Trader Joe’s. The Business Journal reports that Trader Joe’s is passing on this site and on Greensboro."
