Tony Collins and Cyndy Hayworth Claim West Friendly/Hobbs Road In Need Of Urban Renewal

Roch Smith Jr shoots gaping holes in a News & Record article written by former  chairpersons of the Greensboro Zoning Commission, Tony Collins and Cyndy Hayworth, in which Collins and Hayworth claim the Friendly/Hobbs Road area is in need of urban renewal:

"While other cities, such as Charleston, S.C., are guided toward urban renewal with leaders who are creative and uniting, Greensboro approaches renewal with conflict and the NIMBY mentality. We didn’t want FedEx but it is one of the reasons our economic losses weren't greater during the recession."

What in the hell have they been smoking? We are talking about one of the most prosperous areas of the city and Hayworth and Collins dare to utter the words, urban renewal? From Wikipedia:

"The concept of urban renewal as a method for social reform emerged in England as a reaction to the increasingly cramped and unsanitary conditions of the urban poor in the rapidly industrializing cities of the 19th century. The agenda that emerged was a progressive doctrine that assumed better housing conditions would reform its residents morally and economically. Another style of reform – imposed by the state for reasons of aesthetics and efficiency – could be said to have begun in 1853, with the recruitment of Baron Haussmann by Louis Napoleon for the redevelopment of Paris."

Much of Greensboro is in desperate need of urban renewal, Starmount, Starmount Farms, Friendly Shopping Center, The Shoppes at Friendly and the rest in the area of Friendly and Hobbs Road are not among them. Hayworth and Collins have shown with this one paragraph how unqualified they are to be involved in matters of zoning.

Update: Could this have anything to do with the fact that Tony Collins owns Collins & Galyon General Contractors and stands to profit and Cyndy Hayworth constantly needs donations to keep Greensboro's Junior Achievement alive? Nothing to see here.
