City Council: Pull Your Own Pants Off Your Heads

In case you don't already know, one person complained to the Greensboro City Council and now Council is considering a ban on saggy pants on GTA buses. That's right, one complaint.

Now don't get me wrong, I think saggy pants are stupid. Take for example their origins in prison uniform pants that almost never fit properly and are constantly sliding down leaving prisoners no choice but to wear them that way. Hence the reason many prisons have switched to jump suits. Baggy pants had their beginning as a way of saying a young thug had been to prison and wanted everyone to know he was proud of it.

But seriously, are our bus drivers going to be put in danger to enforce this rule? As News & Record Editor Allen Johnson points out, these aren't college students and from what I've seen living here in East Greensboro, most, though not all, of these young men wearing saggy pants are at the very least wanna-be thugs. But to ban them on buses-- it won't accomplish a thing.

You see, while you might get some of them to pull their pants up before boarding you'll be placing bus drivers in danger. Expect a push back from the drivers' union. And more importantly, as if you need me to tell you, as if the 1960s never happened and Rock-n-Roll or banned books never existed-- if you want to make something, anything, more popular, you only need to try and put it down.

For example: Over the weekend, Roch Smith Jr removed this blog and George Hartzman's blog from his "community aggregator" at Greensboro101.com and my traffic has gone up every day since. Banning things with which you don't agree is a long proven strategy towards making the banned thing become more popular and yourself irrelevant-- thousands of years of history has proven it so.

As always Folks, please share this post with everyone you know. Thank you.
