In what will be deemed a landmark decision the North Carolina Court of Appeals reversed a lower court ruling in the case of Gary W Jackson vs Charlotte Mecklenberg Hospital Authority ruling that certain records that were previously denied access to the public are now deemed public records.
The records include settlement documents such as those documents that list settlements in the many lawsuits the City of Greensboro and other government agencies have long kept secret.
Have no doubt, upon his return from holiday, Tom Carruthers and the Greensboro Legal Department are about to be swamped. No more will the City be able to break the law, settle out of court and get away with it with the public having no idea who was responsible in the first place.
Expect big changes in the make-up of the next Greensboro City Council.
