In this first newsletter from the Greensboro Radio Project we
have updates on the effort, a brief overview of the project, a report
from our first big fundraiser, and ways you can get involved!
TELL ME ABOUT THIS RADIO PROJECT
The Greensboro Radio Project is a grassroots non-profit organization
working to launch a community-run radio station in our city. We applied
ot the FCC for and were granted a construction permit for a new low
power FM (LPFM) radio station. When it's launched our radio station will
broadcast out of Northeast Greensboro at the frequency 102.7.
We anticipate broadcasting a variety of programming on the station
including, music, news, talk shows and more. Part of the mission is to
help teach media production to community members, empowering them to
tell their own stories using our radio station as a platform.
LPFM stations are allowed to broadcast with a maximum of 100 watts. We
anticipate this will cover a large part of Greensboro, including
downtown. In addition to our broadcasting area, we plan to stream our
station online and publish many of our shows as podcasts.
UPDATES
On April 23rd we held a great public meeting at the McGirt-Horton
Library on Philips Ave. Thanks to everyone who came out to get
involved! There are two major areas of work right now - fundraising and
programming. The fundraising committee will be working on some events
over the next several months, a fundraising appeal letter, and some
other fun ideas. The programming committee is developing a process for
community members to submit ideas for radio shows, which will start
closer to the time we go on the air. We've also filed for tax exempt
status and a construction permit extension.
MERLE HAGGARD TRIBUTE FUNDRAISER
On May 6, Matty Sheets hosted a tribute concert to the late great Merle
Haggard. Tons of people came down to Gibb's Hundred Brewing Company to
hear some of Greensboro's best songwriters, including Molly McGinn, Sam
Frazier, Jon Dwyer, Bob Fleming, Laura Jane Vincent, Emily Stewart,
Carrie Pazdziora, Abigail Dowd, Richard Boyd, Douglas Moore Jr.
We raised over $500! Thanks so much to the musicians
that generously donated their time and talent! And thanks to everyone
that came out to hear some great music and support our radio station.
