"There is no proof that antibacterial hand and body soaps work better than normal soap or even that they are safe for frequent use, the Food and Drug Administration said on Friday.
As such, the agency established a new rule that requires manufacturers to either remove certain ingredients from their products or else stop selling the products at all.
The move is aimed at countering consumer perception that the antibacterial washes are more effective at killing germs and preventing illness, said the FDA’s Dr. Janet Woodcock.
“In fact, some data suggests that antibacterial ingredients may do more harm than good over the long-term,” she said.
