In the late 1960s and early 1970s Western Electric transferred 30,000 employees to Greensboro. That was what built Northwest Greensboro.
But it also led to decades of classrooms in trailers because the school systems couldn't build schools fast enough to meet demand. And before the classrooms were all finished, most of the people who moved to Greensboro retired and either moved to Guilford County or left altogether.
By the time the schools were finished the kids were already in college. Then they moved away never to return.
To add insult to injury, we locals saw no long term improvements in our lives but were stuck with paying for all the infrastructure made necessary by such a large influx of people. And we are still paying for it today.
Amazon Go Home! No one recruited the Cone Brothers, Burlington Industries, J P Stevens, Blue Bell (Wrangler) or R J Reynolds to Greensboro. Even Lollard Tobacco came here the first time without incentives. Companies who plan to stay are built from the ground up and the infrastructure grows with them. It's a proven formula that has worked since the beginning of the Industrial Age and it's time we returned to it.
Business recruitment is an industry in itself. An industry designed to benefit the business recruitment industry. And I don't the need to recruit any more of them here until they are willing to work on commission only.
