Mike Barber Shows City Subsidies First Tee

In an e-mail that was sent to myself and others, Greensboro City Councilman, Mike Barber wrote:

"The First Tee of the Triad covers an 11 county area and our Chapter originated in Winston Salem. The City of Greensboro provides no funding to our Chapter, nor has any ever been requested to my knowledge in our 6 year existence. We do however, provide programming at our cost to Big Brothers, Big Sisters, YMCA, and other organizations in the summer, and provide programming for 8 weeks in the spring and fall at Gillespie. Greensboro Parks and Rec do not provide golf with life skills for kids and we fill that void at no cost to the city. We do this at approx. 11 other locations including Winston Lake, a Winston Salem City owned facility. The organization 6 years ago signed an agreement with the city for The First Tee of the Triad to serve its kids at Gillespie, 4 years before I arrived. We are hoping to grow our Gillespie presence."

Gillespie meaning Gillespie Golf Course on Martin Luther King Blvd and owned by the City of Greensboro.

But strangely enough, Federal Form 990 tax filings for First Tee of the Triad, which Mike Barber claims he, himself filled out, shows no payments for the use of Gillespie Park golf facilities.

Could it be a mistake in Mr Barber's Federal filings? It could. That's why George Hartzman has filed a public information request with the City of Greensboro to verify.

Yes, it's a non profit and it's for a good cause but for every Dollar that goes to First Tee of the Triad less than 7 cents goes to support their cause while in the meantime Mike Barber draws  total executive compensation of $242,916, (Correction: $103,494)  in 2011, executive director, Anne Marie Goslak was only paid $55,000 to run the entire operation as their only employee listed on Federal Tax Returns.
