City Council Votes To Let Voters Decide GPAC

The Greensboro City Council voted 7-2 tonight to allow Greensboro voters to decide whether or not to fund the downtown Greensboro Performing Arts Center with Councilwoman Bellamey-Smalls and Councilwoman Hoffman voting against voter participation.

But, and this is a big but. Mayor Robbie Perkins warned that anyone who voted yes to voter participation had the right to bring the matter back to a council vote at future council meetings. In other words, Perkins, who argued against voter participation up until he cast his ballot in favor of voter participation, plans to renig on his vote.

And no, I didn't need my crystal ball to see that.

GPAC also faced it's first cost overrun tonight when it was pointed out that renderings showing driveways through and forcing the closing of Festival Park where groups like Conservatives For Guilford County, Occupy Greensboro and others have gather for political rallies, would render free political speech in Downtown Greensboro dead. When this was pointed out to the Mayor and GPAC supporters they acted as if they didn't care.
