United Healthcare announced today that they plan to hire 573 people locally and not a single local developer made a dime on the deal. That's right, not even Mayor Robbie Perkins. You see, as Councilman Zack Matheny pointed out, it ain't about site ready development or wasting $Millions in tax dollars to put water and sewer into empty industrial parks owned by Millionaire developers 10 miles outside the City limits.
"Member Zack Matheny told WFMY News 2 it's all about the workforce, "They met with us and met with our workforce development to really determine if there was a workforce they could hire. That's one of the most important things companies look for - is there ample workforce to actually go to work?"
That's right, Zack, it's about education and skills. It's all about the workforce. You're exactly right. I couldn't have said it better. And while attracting 573 medical and clerical jobs is great it still isn't enough. If Greensboro is going to thrive we are going to have to bring back manufacturing-- the proven foundation upon which modern economies are built. And the easiest way to bring back manufacturing is to bend over backwards to attract and build small manufacturers right here in Greensboro.
Small manufacturers become large manufacturers while other small manufacturers become the training grounds for the larger manufacturers that clowns like Pat Danahy, CEO of the Greensboro Partnership wastes all his time and our tax dollars trying to attract. You see, if there are no manufacturers here then it's pretty safe for other manufacturers to assume there is no workforce here trained in manufacturing.
You see, every city in the free world is chasing the giant corporations but there's almost no competition in the market to attract the little guys. Hell, Greensboro has a history of running them off. My partners and I are building our own small manufacturing business in Burlington where the cost of a business license is 1/10th of what Greensboro wanted. And that's just one of dozens of things that were easier, cheaper and faster to get done in Burlington. Think about it, Dude!
The buildings are cheaper too because it's easier to find buildings that haven't been snatched up by developers and speculators in cahoots with Robbie Perkins. Not that he isn't there, just not as intrenched as in Greensboro where his kind is destroying our local economy. The only thing I don't like about Burlington is they won't let me bring my chickens there. But hey, maybe that will change when they get to know me better.
So put your head on it Zack, start thinking about ways we can help existing small, local manufacturers expand or new local manufacturers start up. Look into manufacturing co-ops and other locally owned businesses that will be tied to the area or to ideas like a Downtown Greensboro Aquarium that includes Aquaponics a quiet, environmentally friendly form of manufacturing/farming that can be distributed throughout all of Greensboro's working class neighborhoods attracting Millions of visitors a year to Downtown while employing hundreds of Greensboro residents in the very neighborhoods in which they live. I mean, seriously, are we going to be outdone by Concord too?
That's how you get elected Mayor and someday Congressman, Zack.
