Police Encourage You to Secure Your Outdoor Items
GREENSBORO, NC (March 27, 2013) – Although it may not feel like spring just yet, soon warm weather will be upon us; and, with warm weather comes an increase of outdoor activities. Home repairs. Lawn work. Children playing outside. Bar-b-ques.
For most people, the change of season is an opportunity to get outdoors and celebrate nature’s glory. For others, warm weather provides an opportunity to take valuables that are left unattended and unsecured.
Thieves look for items that are easy to steal. Take a good look at your home from the criminal’s point of view. Walk around the outside of your home. What valuables do you have in plain view? Here are a few tips to protect your property:
Lock your sporting or exercise equipment, gardening and mechanic tools, children’s toys or bikes in your garage, shed or home. Don’t leave them outside or in an open garage.
Whether you are inside or outside, make sure to lock your home, shed and garage. Open garages have been a tempting target in the past. Close your garage door when it is not in your sight – even if you are working outside.
Don’t leave your yard equipment or tools unattended. If you leave your lawn mower, leaf blower, or trimmer in the front yard while you are inside, a passerby can take it.
Lawn care businesses must their tools locked up or in sight, as well. Some are being left in the beds of pickup trucks and on trailers, and they are being carried off.

Businesses and residents should make a record of your tools that have serial numbers. Record the number on a list, and keep the list in a safe place. You can also photograph the tools, and etch or paint your own marking on them, such as your driver’s license number “NCDL 1234567.” If they are stolen, this information helps police find and return your property.
And while you are outside enjoying nature’s glory, get to know your neighbors. Communities are safer when people are looking out for each other. If your neighborhood doesn’t already have one, consider starting a Neighborhood Watch. These programs are proven to prevent and reduce crime.
To learn more about protecting your property, and how to start a Neighborhood Watch, contact your Community Resource Officer. If you don’t know who your Community Resource Officer is, find out at www.gsopd.org. Visit the “Our Communities” section.
