Could Our Schools Be Contributing To Violence On Greensboro's Streets?

Reading the following LTE by Eugene E. Pfaff Jr.Sunday, July 28, 2013, Greensboro News & Record, makes me wonder if 12 years of public school might be teaching them what we now see on our streets.

Violence by students too often is condoned

Violent attacks by students on students or faculty have increased in schools. These students commit serious crimes, yet their offenses are excused and they return to school. We are teaching these students that they can ignore laws and resort to violence without punishment.

Administrators who excuse such behavior encourage more serious crimes. One defended lax discipline by stating that education was a right. Access to an education is a right; education is a privilege based on academic performance and personal behavior.

Students who commit such crimes have no place in our schools. No wonder many people decline a career involving possible assault, or parents prefer private schools or home schooling. Older generations that guided us through national crises did so because they learned academic and social responsibility in school.

We cannot allow students to behave as criminals, and then expect them to act responsibly in the workforce or the armed services. Until we demand appropriate behavior from students, our public school system will continue to deteriorate.

Does anyone think behaviors learned at school are suddenly forgotten when the bell rings? If yes then look at how I turned out and tell me you honestly believe that to be true.
