Along US 70 to the East of Burlington near the town of Haw River, in the Haw River flood plain there used to be no less than 3 used auto parts dealers. When those properties changed hands the State of North Carolina blocked the new owners from operating used auto parts businesses because of the toxins that leaked from the cars into the Haw River and eventually into Jordan Lake.
As I watched the discussions on Ashley Creek Apartments I was amazed as they discussed storage, parking lots and garages in a flood plain while no one discussed the environmental damages caused by flooded cars. Funny thing is: auto salvage operations are required by State and Federal laws to drain and recycle the various fluids from their cars before they park the cars, leaving only trace amounts behind. The cars and trucks at Ashley Creek Apartments along Buffalo Creek which feeds into the Haw River, are fully filled with toxic fluids.
Environmental laws no longer allow auto salvage operations to be built in flood plains because of these very issues. Every drop of oil and gasoline from those flooded cars ends up in Jordan Lake. Haven't we got enough Jordan Lake issues?
That's right, it's Hell Day again!
