Wendover Avenue Traffic Enforcement Campaign Leads to Arrest of Wanted Man
GREENSBORO, NC (August 6, 2013)
– A Greensboro man with at least one outstanding warrant for arrest
attempted to flee from police this morning after he was pulled over for
speeding during the Greensboro Police Department’s increased traffic
enforcement efforts along Wendover Avenue.
At approximately 9:15 a.m.,
a GPD motorcycle officer initiated a traffic stop on a grey Accura that
was traveling westbound above the posted speed limit on Wendover Avenue
near Benjamin Parkway. The operator of the vehicle, later identified
as 32-year-old Dean Rene Peters Jr, provided a false name to the
officer. As the officer was attempting to verify his identify, Peters
jumped from his vehicle and fled on foot toward a nearby wood line.
Police canine tracked Peters to a parking deck at Wesley Long Community
Hospital at 501 N. Elam Avenue where he was taken into custody without
incident at approximately 10:17 a.m.
Peters, of 216 Wind Road, has an active warrant for arrest for common
law robbery. He may face additional charges associated with this
morning’s incident.
In addition to apprehending the wanted subject, the traffic enforcement
efforts resulted in 15 citations for various offenses, including seven
for speeding. Enforcement efforts were temporarily suspended while
police pursued the fleeing fugitive.
“Zero tolerance” traffic enforcement along Wendover Avenue will
continue through the first week in October. After that, selective
enforcement efforts will take place along the corridor for an additional
9 months.

Greensboro, NC 27402-3136It has long been common knowledge that traffic stops are one of the most effective means of locating and arresting fugitives. The fact that it has taken Greensboro 40 plus years to recognize the need to aggressively enforce traffic laws on what has long been known as Wendover Speedway only enforces my long standing assertions that not enough has been done to fight crime in Greensboro.
