On The Jim Westmoreland Letter

On Tuesday I posted a letter written by Greensboro City Manager, Jim Westmoreland calling it a gag order. On Wednesday Ben Holder posted the same letter calling it a sales pitch.  Ben and I do not work together and I can promise you we got the letter from different sources even though I have no idea who Ben's source is. Do I know what Ben is working on? Certainly not all of it. Nor does Ben have everything I've got but I'm betting he's got pieces.

But hey, this isn't a competition, Ben can take all the time he needs-- I'll wait. Odds are good he'll find something I haven't got. I promised Mr Westmoreland I wouldn't break this story.

In the letter Jim Westmoreland writes:

"Over the last couple weeks, I’ve heard from some in the organization that nothing happens when concerns are addressed through the chain of command.   First and foremost, remember that many times personnel issues cannot be discussed publicly due to state records laws. So, there may be actions being taken that you are not aware of. But also rest assured that your department directors and managers are being encouraged by City leadership to take any concerns expressed by employees seriously and to take necessary steps to address them.  We can and will work together as a team to make changes in areas that need improvement. I simply ask that you work within the team to make those concerns known."

The problem for Mr Westmoreland is that the issues that I am working on date back to 2011 when rank and file City employees first addressed the problems with their supervisors just as Mr Westmoreland is telling them to do today but nothing ever got done.

Mr Westmoreland's words ring hollow under such circumstance and honest, hard working Greensboro employees fed up with years of waiting for "actions being taken that you are not aware of" start looking for other ways to correct the problem.

You see, when I was in the waste industry I trained in the same classes as the folks who work for the City and Ben, he used to work for the City. We're friends with those folks. And so it is they seek out people like Ben Holder and myself to make things happen. I don't have to tell Ben, he'll find it. And so will others.
