First Things First

Councilman Jim Kee has recommended that the City of Greensboro transfer funds from the planned Florida Street Extension to the East Market Street, War Memorial Stadium and Nealtown Extension projects.  Kudos to Councilman Kee.

For starters: No one other than Robbie Perkins and Roy Carroll wants the Florida Street Extension when a widening of 1 block of English Street would serve the same purpose for East Greensboro and has been expected but not delivered for 30 years.

Isn't it about time the City Council lived up to their promise to save War Memorial Stadium? Seems like Perkins and company can always find new things to spend taxpayer money on while always forgetting about the promises made in the past.

And how many times do I have to remind you that what breeds in East Greensboro does not stay in East Greensboro? It's true that overall crime is down in Greensboro but what is it going to cost you to keep it that way when the economy of Greensboro's poorest neighborhoods only continues to get worse? "Lock 'em all up," you shout. From a pure monetary standpoint, not considering their threat to society, with the cost of incarceration running between $18,000 per year in Mississippi to approximately $50,000 in California we'd be better off to pay them to stay home and sit on their asses.

Mayor Perkins is right, we must invest in our community. But Mayor Perkins is going to have to learn that our community extends far beyond the projects he and Roy Carroll have invested in. Like it or not, Mr Mayor, and despite your deceitful tricks and the shots across the bow of the rest of City Council, your influence with the citizens of Greensboro is quickly eroding. There's new ideas and new ways on the horizon, you'll get on board or swim-- alone.

You see, had you kept your promises before, I would have never had a second thought about a downtown Greensboro Performing Arts Center. You promised me, you failed to deliver and now you're telling me you'll keep your promises if I give you what you want? Most of us learned that didn't work by the time we finished grade school. Only the spoiled brats got away with that. Are you still a spoiled brat, Mr Mayor?
