What's A Bronze Award From The League of American Bicyclists Worth To Your City?

WalkScore released their list of most walkable and bikeable cities today. Greensboro scored a 28.0 WalkScore and a BikeScore of 39.8, failing grades in anyone's book.

The top 10 BikeScore cities all had a score of 61.5 or better.

Recently, Greensboro was awarded a Bronze Award from the League of American Bicyclists. Getting the award required city staff spend valuable time submitting forms and presenting a resolution before the Greensboro City Council for the council's approval. I admit, I first believed the League of American Bicyclists award was running another of those pay to play awards like the money spent to buy Greensboro's 3rd place Savvy Award of Excellence but I was wrong as no money changed hands.

Then the City's Public Relations Department spent their time pitching the story to the local media outlets who all presented the story as if A Bronze Award from the League of American Bicyclists was a real accomplishment. As you can see, a Bronze award from the League of American Bicyclists is the equivalent of getting an attendance award in kindergarten even though you never learned to spell your name. Or cat.

Accomplishment? Hardly. Just another example of how the City of Greensboro and our local media work together to paint a picture of Greensboro as something it isn't.

Awards for failures never create incentive for success. As a matter of fact: rewards for failures only create incentives for more failures. If this is the best the League of American Bicyclists and the City of Greensboro can do then what is either one good for?
