Kathy Manning's campaign response to the $30 million plus Greensboro taxpayer handout for a luxury hotel project, questions and commentary

CLAIM: “..They want a luxury hotel, but they want taxpayers to help pay for it.”

FACT: Neither Kathy Manning nor her husband has ever received a dime of taxpayer money from this project: The attack ad falsely claims they received $2 million in Greensboro government money. As the News & Record reported in 2018, the developers “never got” money from the city and no city money will come to Manning or her husband from these projects.

Isn't the hotel absolutely dependent upon the parking deck?

Didn't Kathy's husband Randall Kaplan and his business partners actions,
clearly indicate the hotel wouldn't work without the taxpayer provided parking deck?
FACT: The Kaplan-Manning family is receiving no profits from the hotel project. They have publicly pledged to donate any and all profits the family may earn from the project to an area-wide charity, the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro.

Why receive no profits from the venture,
if they are not making any money on it?

Didn't they intend to receive profits, before they didn't?

FACT: Kathy Manning has no role in the Westin Hotel project: Kathy Manning has nothing to do with the Westin hotel being built in downtown Greensboro by a group of investors that includes her husband. Like countless other women, Manning has pursued her own professional and philanthropic ventures.

CLAIM: “…So, they got $2 million in government money from Greensboro.”

CLAIM: “…Kathy took part in a $30 million scheme for a parking garage…”

How can a powerful spouse not be involved?

Didn't go to any meals in support of her husband's business interests?

FACT: The City Of Greensboro commissioned a study showing the need for more downtown parking: This study found that according to Kimley-Horn and Associates, “Off-street parking availability and options are limited. The City has not added new parking decks or surface lots in almost 30 years, while Downtown business activities have increased in recent years.”

Didn't the same firm hired to design the parking deck for the hotel,
perform the study justifying the hotel parking deck they got paid to design?

"Downtown needs more parking spaces to keep up with future development demands, according to an analysis the city commissioned last month.

The author of the analysis: Kimley-Horn, the engineering firm the city hired to design a $30 million deck on south Davie Street.

The city released Kimley-Horn's analysis last week, in part to quiet critics of the south Davie deck and a second $30 million deck the city is planning to build on Bellemeade Street.

Other observations in the analysis also repeat the city's talking points:

Three of the city's four parking decks are at or near 85 percent full, which Kimley-Horn said is the industry standard for "effective capacity."

Which wasn't true

The fourth deck on Greene Street is at 100 percent capacity."

Which wasn't true
CLAIM: “Kathy Manning and her husband Randall Kaplan are cashing-in their political connections to build a parking deck that will benefit their luxury hotel — to the tune of $30 million of your tax dollars, plus $2.3 million every year of tax dollars to Manning and her husband’s pet project.”

FACT: The Kaplan-Manning family is receiving no profits from the hotel project. They have publicly pledged to donate any and all profits the family may earn from the project to an area-wide charity, the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro.

Is the pledge to receive no profits irrevocable,
or just in case she wins?

Why donate all the profits if the "family" wasn't going to profit
from taxpayer money?

Doesn't saying "The Kaplan-Manning family",
negate the "Kathy Manning has no role in the Westin Hotel project" line?
