The News and Record's Richard Barron on $2.3 million Greensboro taxpayer dollars for Jim Melvin, Sam Simpson, David Powell, Roy Carroll and friends

"Greensboro has now committed $2.3 million toward providing water and sewer service to the Greensboro-Randolph Megasite.

Why no mention of David Powell?

The Greensboro City Council Tuesday voted 7-2 to approve a contract with HDR Engineering Inc. for design work and environmental studies to extend city water and sewer to the site in the northeastern corner of Randolph County.

Why no mention of Sam Simpson's compensation?

Council members Tony Wilkins and Marikay Abuzuaiter voted “no.”

The City Council has not committed to the entire project, which would cost $22.5 million including 16.6 miles of water lines, 8 miles of sewer line and a sewer lift station.

Why no mention of the "private monies" involved?

The project includes building a water line and a sewer line south from Greensboro and another water line across southern Guilford County from Randleman Regional Reservoir.

Local and regional officials are buying land in an 1,800 acre area just south of the Guilford County Line they say would be suitable to recruit an auto manufacturer to North Carolina.

Randolph County currently owns 255 acres and will consider in June buying 170 more acres. The Greensboro-Randolph Megasite Foundation, which is coordinating the project, says it has control of the remainder of the land through purchase options.

Auto manufacturing plants use millions of gallons of water, so Greensboro has proposed water lines from the west and north to provide reliable service, according the city utility staff’s report to City Council.

The staff document says that water lines will cost $15 million and sewer will cost $5.3 million.
If approved, construction could begin as early as Sept. 1, 2016."

Who would be stupid enough to spend $22.5 million to get water and sewer to a Megasite, about 10 miles away from another that already has it?
