Is Trudy Wade's Newspaper Bill As Bad As Claimed?

In a recent article titled Data on legal notices is bad news for newspapers, Roch Smith jr writes:

"Data from Guilford County show that tax collections were unaffected by whether or not delinquency notices were published in the News & Record."
Despite claims to the contrary from the News & Record,. Roch also includes documentation along with writing:

"Years of data from Guilford County show that whether tax notices were published in the mighty News & Record or only in the the tiny Jamestown News and Carolina Peacemaker, tax collections remained a steady 98+ percent. And if you want to get picky, collections actually went up slightly in years when notices were not placed in the News & Record."

But as Roch pointed out in his article, the News & Record has published no data to back up their claims that the higher costs of posting legal notices in newspapers is more effective or a better deal for the taxpayers.

Let this be a lesson, Folks. When the local status-quo pushes an issue it is usually because they've something they don't want you to know.

Trudy Wade didn't dream up the newspaper bill. Keith Brown pushed it for years and years at his blog Triad Watch under the tag, public notice, where he has written dozens of articles on it. And Keith is well known to the entire News & Record staff who blamed the entire thing on Trudy Wade and never once mentioned Keith all in an effort to twist the story.

Yes, it will be bad for local newspapers but is it the responsibility of taxpayers to forever subsidize newspapers that cannot be trusted with the truth?

Greensboro News & Record Circulation 2016

So have you ever wondered how many people actually read the Greensboro News & Record? According to this page #119, lifted from the 2016 Berkshire- Hathaway Annual Report, circulation for 2016 was 39,474 daily and 55.621 Sunday papers.

You might want to think about that before spending your advertising dollars with the News & Fishwrap.

Prior restraint or prior censorship eliminates certain material from being published or communicated.

In Greensboro, North Carolina, the government and/or the news industry prevents controversial information from being disseminated to the public.

I believe “Freedom of the Press” is the right to be free from prior restraint.

I believe Greensboro doesn't have a free press.

"Prior restraint or prior censorship is censorship
in which certain material may not be published or communicated...

Prior restraint prevents the censored material from being heard or distributed at all...

Prior restraint often takes the form of an order
prohibiting the publication of a specific document or subject.

Sometimes, a party becomes aware of a forthcoming publication on a particular subject
and seeks to prevent it: to halt ongoing publication and prevent its resumption.

...“Freedom of the Press” is defined as the right to be free from prior restraints.

Thus it is often considered to be the most extreme form of censorship.

A prior restraint, by contrast and by definition,
has an immediate and irreversible sanction."

Misleading Richard M. Barron on why Greensboro's job market sucks in Greensboro's News and Record

"we’re losing the kinds of jobs that support a middle class lifestyle — manufacturing, skilled trades and services...

Because 'free trade' agreements supported by Warren Buffett and friends
sent our best jobs oversees for the benefit of our elite
who control the political establishment

They continue to decline as the economy shifts away from one that makes things in vast factories to one that makes advanced goods and provides services.

Supported in part by the News and Record's editorial board

The most educated service providers, professionals, information technology workers and managers, are in the minority while thousands of less-educated workers are trapped in low-wage and often part-time service jobs.

Most of Greensboro's working poor

...“The largest growth in jobs we’ve seen have come from the lowest wage occupations,” ...

“On the other end we have also seen significant growth in high-wage occupations. It’s a lot harder to break into those occupations. You need a lot of education and that education costs a lot of money that those low-wage workers just don’t have. So, too many workers will be locked into low-wage occupations.”

...In the Greensboro-High Point metro, which includes Guilford, Rockingham and Randolph counties, health care occupations grew by 18 percent, adding 5,900 jobs, from early 2007 through July, without a pause for the recession.

High paying health care occupations are government subsidized
via taxpayer wealth transfer through theft
for the benefit of the parasitic credentialed class

Goods-producing jobs, by comparison, dropped by 21 percent, or 11,200 jobs.

While the even higher profits from the lower waged outsourced jobs remained with those who own the companies who shafted American workers
and made more money than they were making before,
like Warren Buffett who owns the News and Record

Doctors, the best-paid nurses and other personnel are at the top of the health care industry, but thousands of people who might have worked middle-class jobs a generation ago in manufacturing face lower-wage, often part-time work in many health care jobs.

So the highest paid employees in the health care industry
ran up prices so high, hundreds of local families at the bottom went bankrupt
by not being able to pay government sponsored, artificially high costs

On a broader level, Greensboro-High Point’s number of employed people..., has recovered since the worst months of the recession, but remains lower by 10,000 jobs, from 370,000 jobs to about 360,000 jobs from July 2007 until this July.

How are 10,000 fewer jobs nine years later a recovery Richard,
if there are more people living here since then?

A different survey of people who say they are working or looking for work was almost the same in July as it was in July 2007, at about 370,000 people.

Population estimates, July 1, 2015; 517,600

Population estimates base, April 1, 2010; 488,406

By comparison, the Research Triangle city of Raleigh saw total employment grow from 514,400 in July 2007 to 600,000 this July, a rate of 17 percent.

That means Greensboro’s economy is essentially stagnant compared with Raleigh’s education and tech economy...

.
.
517,600 - 488,406 = 29,124 more people with 10,000 fewer 'looking' for jobs
between 2010 and 2015,
meaning Richard Barron is a propagandist at best
and is definitely a shitty journalist who doesn't mind lying to his readers
who ignores simple math

https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=guilford+county+nc+population+2007
517,600 - 464,924 = 52,676 more people with 10,000 fewer jobs
between 2007 and 2015

Our population grew by 11%, while actual jobs fell 10,000,
which is terrible, but they won't tell anyone the actual facts
to keep most in line and supporting the status quo

Who does bullshit information like this help?

What Did You Say Increased Water And Sewer Rates Are For?

Today Susan Ladd peddles the latest propaganda concerning the recent effort to increase Greensboro's water and sewer rates:

"The longer maintenance and upgrading is delayed, the higher the cost will be. The materials cost more, and in many cases, the process costs more.

Pipes that could be repaired by relining now may have to be dug up and replaced at a much higher cost later if allowed to deteriorate, Drew said.

Greensboro Mayor Nancy Vaughan said she remembers well what happened the last time the council deferred raising water and sewer rates. The following year, an even larger increase was necessary.
“We are literally still paying for it now,” Vaughan said.

At its last meeting, the council was one vote shy of the needed 6-vote majority to raise rates."

It's possible she is entirely correct but here is my reply:

"Perhaps repairing current water and sewer infrastructure would be a better use of the $22 Million Dollars the Greensboro City Council plans to spend to provide water and sewer to the Greensboro-Randolph Megasite in Randolph County.

Perhaps the rate increase is actually designed to cover the costs of providing $22 Million Dollars in Water and Sewer lines to the Greensboro-Randolph Megasite in Randolph County?

Too bad we've no transparency in local government as we'll never know for sure"

Until you can show us this isn't yet another backdoor attempt at funding projects the citizens of Greensboro neither want nor need, selling the public on any increase will always be a problem.

And in the same article Ms Ladd addresses a story about Greensboro's water quality that was first broke here on Thursday, June 2, 2016.

"Recent articles by The Guardian listed Greensboro as one of the municipal water systems “cheating” on its lead testing.
Greensboro appeared in a table of cities that the article said “violated EPA guidelines” by instructing residents to open the tap slowly, because slow flow rates cause less lead to be dislodged from pipes. Actually, the instructions said to “gently open the cold water tap” so as to keep the water from splashing out of the bottle, Drew said.

“The Guardian made the assumption that ‘open gently’ meant ‘flow slowly,’ ” Drew said.
Nor did the city violate EPA guidelines, Drew said. Those instructions, used in the 2015 water tests cited by The Guardian, were based on state and EPA guidelines at that time, Drew said."

But as is usually the case with the N&R, Ms Ladd provides no documentation, preferring instead to use only he said, she said accounts.

Vote Billy Jones for Mayor of Greensboro in 2017 and watch things change for the better.

Recent Jeff Gauger and News and Record related excerpts; Warren Buffett betrayed Greensboro's community

Warren Buffett owns a huge chunk of the financial industry,
and enough of the information dissemination industry to manage 'news' messaging enough
to protect his investments like Clayton Homes and its financing arm

Warren Buffett owns Greensboro's News and Record.

The News and Record didn't report how Clayton Homes rips off poor people.

Jeff Gauger didn't report how Wells Fargo makes money from North Carolina's retirement plans.

The News and Record didn't report how mimicking the federal government's Thrift Savings Plan could save Greensboro's employees more than $500,000 per year, to preserve Warren Buffett's profitability at the expense of their readers.

Jeff Gauger and friends steal hundreds of millions from their readers via lies of omission so Warren Buffett can make more money.

Greensboro's City Council is in on it, including Tony Wilkins, whose cowardice from the right is a complete disgrace.  They fucked their own employees with the help of Jim Westmoreland, Mary Vigue, Connie Hammond and Donnie Turlington.

Nancy Vaughan led the Council into shafting their own employees by letting the financial industry continue to grossly overcharge fees in the City's 457 ICMA-RC retirement plan.

It's inexcusable.

"Ex-Triad partnership chief has case continued again", Stan Kelly, Wells Fargo and North Carolina's Crony Governments

That's how to get rid of people like Ron Elmer who just lost to Dan Blue
for North Carolina's Treasurer

By not making an endorsement for the NC Treasurer Democratic primary,
Greensboro's News and Record, along with most of the other state papers
fucked hundreds of thousands of municipal employees out of more than $500,000,000 per year
and most don't know.

Stan Kelly knows.

Stan Kelly presided over years of skimming money from retirement plans for Wells Fargo,
was involved in purchasing elected officials with legal bribes
and now, with the help of organizations like the Piedmont Triad Partnership
will continue to fleece North Carolina employees with Warren Buffet's blessing

Joe Killian and Jeff Gauger betrayed North Carolina's employees
for Warren Buffett

Allen Johnson and Doug Clark betrayed North Carolina's employees
for Warren Buffett

http://greensboroperformingarts.blogspot.com/2016/03/ex-triad-partnership-chief-has-case.html

Marty only extracts rent from most of the restaurants on his properties, which the News and Record's Allen Johnson doesn't seem to understand.  But Allen doesn't understand basic economics, so that's what we have for an 'opinion leader'.

More like a cheerleader of the uneducated variety whom everyone likes to look at anyway.

Doug Clark, Allen Johnson and Jeff Gauger didn't understand or foresee what happened last time the economy tanked, and their jobs are to not know or report as we decline once again.

They, along with the Triad Business Journal, are just cheerleaders for the 1%.

What Warren Buffett's newspapers did to North Carolina's employees

http://greensboroperformingarts.blogspot.com/2016/03/what-warren-buffetts-newspapers-did-to.html

Who do you think Greensboro's News and Record is going to endorse?

Greensboro's News and Record is directly responsible
for North Carolina and the City of Greensboro's employees
paying more for pension and retirement investments than necessary,
as they have known for years and did nothing

Jeff Gauger has direct personal knowledge
of Elmer's strategy, as I told him on multiples of occasions
and he didn't let Warren Buffett's newspaper report the story

Joe Killian and Susan Ladd know exactly what could have been reported
and wasn't,
and then Joe's wife became a financial industry lobbyist

Jon Hardister barely lifted a finger,
and then failed to act in the best interests of North Carolina employees
by not following through

Tony Wilkins, Nancy Vaughan, Nancy Hoffmann, Sharon Hightower,
Yvonne Johnson, Mike Barber, MariKay Abuzuaiter and Jamal Fox
with Jim Westmoreland, Donnie Turlington and Mary Vigue's help
betrayed those they are supposed to represent

http://greensboroperformingarts.blogspot.com/2016/03/sound-familiar-who-do-you-think.html

Mark Sutter and Jeff Gauger betrayed our community's investing class

They shafted Wachovia's shareholders and they know it

I figure they figure it's okay if most everyone else in the news business did the same

It would certainly be nice to have a local paper with some guts

Watching John Hammer disintegrate isn't a pleasant experience

He looked like someone stole his soul at the PAC press conference,
and his reporting on the subject proved it

How much will Lomax Construction make?

David Hagan already got his taste.

Walker Sanders CFGG has already profited.

DH Griffin was paid to knock everything down.

Who get's the construction contracts?

Who makes the RFP decisions?

Is our community this collectively fucking stupid?

Thanks News and Record and Roy's Rhino.

If there's a hell, Roy Carroll, John Hammer, Brian Clarey, Eric Ginsberg
Chuck Womack, Joe Killian and Jeff Gauger etc... should get first class tickets.

You let pay to play crony capitalism take over Greensboro

Fuck you for betraying your profession.

This one is yours Nancy Vaughan and Jim Westmoreland.

Not only did you use a taxpayer owned property as a gift
for Marty Kotis,
you lied your way into a white elephant of a PAC
while Greensboro's press let you off the hook.

Now that you're re-elected going into a global recession,
when the tide of easy money goes out,
you'll be standing naked and alone as those who profited
recede out of sight.

http://greensboroperformingarts.blogspot.com/2016/01/the-stpac-project-currently-budgeted-at.html

Guess who Warren Buffett's News and Record is endorsing and what Jeff Gauger won't allow to be reported?

http://greensboroperformingarts.blogspot.com/2016/01/guess-who-warren-buffetts-news-and.html

This is why the City of Greensboro didn't want to change their retirement plan options, but did anyway with little fanfare, saving their employees money without saying so.

It's why Jeff Gauger, Joe Killian and Amanda Lehmert at the News and Record, owned by Warren Buffet who owns more than 9% of Wells Fargo, didn't report anything on my proposal to save Greensboro's employees money in the plan.

It's why Jeff, Joe and Amanda didn't tell local Wells Fargo clients how they were being lied to in Envision Retirement Plans.

Thousands of investors in our community are relatively getting ripped off by being overcharged, and the News and Record didn't tell anyone after multiples of interviews and provided documentation.

http://greensboroperformingarts.blogspot.com/2016/01/i-flushed-my-stock-broker-career-by.html

Ever been lied to by omission by a local paper
owned by Warren Buffett?

Any Wachovia shareholders out there
who have been sold a bridge
by the Winston Salem Journal or Greensboro's News and Record?

What's not that really intriguing
is how a modern day news dissemination outlet
can con an entire community into believing what isn't true.

Mo has yet to reap what he sowed with Say Yes to Education
and Say Yes Guilford,
as our local news sources are worthless.

The News and Record and the Rhino Times
are lobbyist driven propaganda machines,
serving not their readers
but their advertisers and publisher's best interests.

What you think you're thinking,
isn't' necessarily what may actually be true,
but may be what some decide behind closed doors
to tell you to think,
and you didn't and most probably won't know.

If you think other than what 'they' want you to think,
they'll label you as unhinged.

etc...

So fuck you Joe Killian, Jeff Gauger and friends

http://greensboroperformingarts.blogspot.com/2015/12/greensboros-news-and-record-doesnt.html

When presented with the opportunity to do right by City of Greensboro's employees, Tony Wilkins, Marikay Abuzuaiter, Nancy Vaughan, Mike Barber, Yvonne Johnson, Jamal Fox and Sharon Hightower supported cronies connected to the financial industry, Jim Westmoreland, Mary Vigue, Rick Lusk and Connie Hammond rather than more than 2,800 employees who are still getting skimmed off of by ICMA-RC, the administrator for the City's 457 retirement plan.

Same thing only different.

When presented with the opportunity to report to the public how the financial industry rips off local investors and retirement plan participants, the News and Record's Joe Killian, Susan Ladd, Stephen Doyle, Jeff Gauger, Margaret Moffet among others including the Rhino Times John Hammer and the Triad Business Journal's Mark Sutter didn't lift a finger for their readers against the parasitic interests who prey upon their readers.

These folks let the banking and investment system steal from you.

And they know it.

And they didn't bother to tell you, as it would upset their benefactors.

Now Mary Vigue is in charge of a legal Ponzi scheme called Say Yes to Education and Say Yes Guilford whose business model skims profits for administrators and vendors meant for college scholarships for Guilford County students with monies donated by local foundations, managed for a profit by the Community Foundation of High Point, and the Community Foundation of Greensboro, who's Walker Sanders lied to get additional taxpayer funding for Greensboro's STPAC with the help of Matt Brown, City Council and City staff, including Rick Lusk.

Rick knew better and went along to keep his job as far as I can tell.

He must throw up a little every time he has to go along with the facade.

http://greensboroperformingarts.blogspot.com/2015/12/why-north-carolina-treasurer-janet.html

Warren Buffett sponsored propaganda this is.

Without disclosing Don and Mayor Vaughan's methane take while Nancy served on the Solid Waste Committee, the News and Record comes out with an advocacy piece without an opposing view.

It's garbage journalism Joe Killian, Allen Johnson and Jeff Gauger.

Where is the chart showing those who received taxpayer benefits and their lawyers and/or agents who also contributed monies to the legislators who voted for the projects?

This kind of non-reporting shows a marriage of government, business and the press, which has become a fascist disease foisted upon our community with the News and Record's active, engaged complicity.

Not much different than Susan Ladd's pro whatever most of our City's elite wants her to be for.

You are promoting higher profits for a few connected businesses at the expense of competitors who didn't purchase some politicians down the street.

The News and Record isn't' a news outlet anymore, but a cheer leading squad for Greensboro's crony capitalists.

Saying Revolution Mills is for or in East Greensboro has been a great example of how you have misled your readers.

Still no reporting of the City's cost lowering exercise in their retirement plan, as it would hurt your benefactor.

Still nothing on Mike Barber's taxpayer take with First Tee of the Triad.

You support the initiatives of crooked politicians, which makes you crooked too.

You didn't tell anyone the math Walker Sanders and Nancy Barakat Vaughan came up with was garbage, which it was/is, especially the extra VIP parking revenue utter nonsense.

You didn't inform the public most of the money committed to Say Yes Guilford is coming in over a series of years, even though they are going to start paying out next year, which appears to be unsustainable.

And we are headed into an economic decline. Remember when I told you in your parking lot of a recession within three years Allen Johnson?

Guess what?

Probably about time to re-remove the archives again, for the fourth time in recent history. That way, you can start all over again, before you start over again, again.

That's the new modern form of professional journalism.

Cover your tracks and most won't remember later anyway.

http://greensboroperformingarts.blogspot.com/2015/12/greensboro-and-oranges-don-and-nancy.html

Eventually, Greensboro's News and Record, who has routinely misinformed and/or misled and/or lied by omission to the public of pay to play by Roy Carroll, Zack Matheny, Mike Barber, Tony Wilkins, Nancy Vaughan, Jamal Fox, Nancy Hoffmann, Yvonne Johnson, the Koury Clan, Jim Melvin, Marty Kotis, Sam Simpson, Mary Vigue, John Lomax, Henry Isaacson, Jim Phillips, George Carr, Dawn Chaney etc... etc... etc...    is going to have to write something about all the corruption at the state level which they will claim to abhor, while completely claiming innocence at the local level.

There is no way Greensboro could be as crooked as it is without the help of a compromised press.

http://greensboroperformingarts.blogspot.com/2015/11/two-more-examples-of-what-news-and.html

Joe, along with the rest of Greensboro's News and Record staff who work for Warren Buffett, who makes money on financial 'Services Brands', chose not to investigate or report on the City of Greensboro's overpriced retirement plan for more than two years, and still haven't, even though the City agreed to lower the cost of the plan with Vangaurd Index Funds.

Now Joe's wife Amanda, who used to cover the City, works for a vendor of the City he is supposed to cover as a journalist, supporting the efforts of the financial industry to overcharge retirement plan participants which her husband refused to report on after he said he would.

Joe told me he would report on the City's overpriced retirement plan and didn't.

I met with the News and Record's Jeff Gauger twice on the subject, he agreed with my contentions, said he would do a story, and didn't, costing thousands of his readers millions per year for the benefit of Warren Buffett.

This is Greensboro, where the public doesn't know shit because our press is as crooked as the crooks they cover with accolades.

http://greensboroperformingarts.blogspot.com/2015/11/two-more-examples-of-what-news-and.html

You own it Susan, Moffitt, Doyle, Gauger and Killian etc... whether you choose to acknoledge your self confirmation bias or not.
It's amazing how someone who has worked so hard to rig this election for Greensboro City Council incumbents is now castigating the public for not participating in the farce.

The News and Record doesn't report correllations to supporter contributions and Council "incentive" hand outs, doesn't bother to identify objvious conflicts of interest of those it's promotiong to win, and expects more to turn out to participate in a pre-determined outcome.

How about telling the public of Jim Melvin's contributions and bundling relative to his $2 million plus take for his white elephant of a megasite a few miles away from another partially owned by a Trudy Wade supporter which is already certified as a site?

How about informing the electorate of Brooks Pierce's Jim Phillips contributions to the mayor after being hired to lobby for and then file suit on the redistricting bill?

Don't these factoids seem relevant?

The low turnout is party the responsibility of the author of the article.

You own it Susan, Moffitt, Doyle, Gauger and Killian etc... whether you choose to acknoledge your self confirmation bias or not.

"David Powell,  former chief executive of Piedmont Triad Partnership, has had his criminal trial continued again...to an "undetermined point in the future."

Powell was replaced by former Wells Fargo executive Stan Kelly on an interim, then permanent basis.

Other News & Record Just Makes Up History

Okay, so maybe it's not all that important to most folks but if by chance you're a hard core NASCAR fan or a women's advocate the details just might be important to you. In that other News & Record for today in this day in history they posted the following article:

Note the date: Feb 4, 1973 and the place, the Greensboro Fair Grounds. The Greensboro Fair Grounds were bulldozed in 1958 to make way for the Greensboro Coliseum which stands on the exact same site.

And then there's this from Wikipedia:

"Louise Smith (July 31, 1916 in Barnesville, Georgia – April 15, 2006) was tied for the second woman to race in NASCAR at the top level. She was known as "the first lady of racing."[1]
She went as a spectator to her first NASCAR race at the Daytona Beach Road Course in 1949. She could not stand watching the races, so she entered her family's shiny new Ford coupe in the race and rolled it. Her hometown Greenville, South Carolina paper featured photos of the wreck, and the town knew about it before she got home.[2] The race was the first race to feature three female drivers (Ethel Mobley and Sara Christian). The trio also competed later that season at the Langley Speedway.

She raced from 1949 to 1956. She won 38 races in her career in numerous formats: late models, modifieds (28 victories), midgets, and sportsman."

So while it might be possible that Lucky Lou Smith raced in Greensboro prior to 1958 she didn't race in Greensboro in 1973-- nobody did. As a matter of fact: I went to a Bloodrock concert at the Greensboro Coliseum in 1973 with a skinny girl from O Henry Oaks. Lots of young hippies, no race cars. I wasn't all that impressed with the concert.

And if Wikipedia isn't enough to prove the other News & Record liars how about History.com:

"Smith retired in 1956 but remained active in the racing world: She sponsored various drivers, and was involved in the Miss Southern 500 Scholarship Pageant at Darlington Raceway in South Carolina. In 1999, she was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in Talladega, Alabama. Smith died in April 2006, at the age of 89."

Not enough?  How about the Henry Ford Museum?

I can find no evidence that Louise Smith ever raced in Greensboro at all but I know without a doubt she did not race here in 1973-- nobody did. As a matter of fact: as NASCAR only used the Greensboro track in 1957 and 1958 and Smith retired from racing in 1956 it's doubtful she ever raced here at all.

Now ask yourself this: If that other News & Record can't be trusted to report something like this with any degree of accuracy, what can they be trusted to report accurately?

So what did happen on this day in history in Greensboro? From the Greensboro Police Department:

"Case #: 1973-4896
Victim: Anderson Brooks

On February 4, 1973 at 1:30 am, Greensboro officers arrived at 814 Cottage Grove Ave. and found Anderson Brooks lying at the bottom of the back steps of the residence. Brooks died due to multiple gunshot wounds."

His killer has yet to be found.

Or how about First Sit-In Participant Finally Gets Cherry Pie:

"In this February 4, 1973 Greensboro Daily News article, Harvey Harris reports on how the four original participants of the 1960 sit-ins at the Greensboro Woolworth's lunch counter — Frank McCain, David Richmond, Jibreel Khazan (formerly Ezell..."

But no, the folks at that other News & Record with 125 years of archives to rely upon had to resort to making shit up. Does that mean they have 125 years of forged archives too?

Update: In looking back, maybe it's about more than NASCAR fans or a women's advocates. Maybe it's about Black History or the family of Anderson Brooks and the long neglected residents of Cottage Grove Ave, an East Greensboro street that has since been removed when The Grove housing project was torn down. (I used to drive a school bus there.) Maybe it's about telling how 4 students from NC A&T University were finally granted their rights as human beings. Maybe it's about how the News & Record would rather make up sheer nonsense than report history that might actually work to empower Greensboro's working classes black and white.

Greensboro Makes Another Meaningless List?

Well as usual when Greensboro makes another meaningless list the News & Record spins the story with their own story, Greensboro, Winston-Salem rank in '2016 Best Active Lifestyle' list, but exactly what does that mean? Does it mean people lead more fit and active lifestyles in Greensboro and Winston-Salem? From the News & Record:

"However, Winston-Salem was ranked 90 in lowest percentage of people who engage in physical activity."

So apparently this isn't a measure of how healthy people really are.

Interestingly enough the Winston-Salem Journal, which is owned by Berkshire Hathaway just as is the News & Record, saw no need to mention this story today or any other day thus far.

So I decided to go find the actual WalletHub Rankings and see what the News & Record left out.

For example: while it is true that Greensboro was given a score of 75th overall by WalletHub Greensboro's “Budget & Participation” Rank was lower at 87 and our “Sports Facilities & Outdoor Environment” Rank was higher at 64.

But check this out: Laredo, Texas which came in at 100 on the scale had a “Budget & Participation” Rank of 93 and a “Sports Facilities & Outdoor Environment” Rank of 100.

So what do these rankings mean? From WalletHub:

"Methodology

In order to identify the cities that encourage an active lifestyle, WalletHub’s analysts compared the 100 most populated U.S. cities across two key dimensions, “Budget & Participation” and “Sports Facilities & Outdoor Environment.” The latter was weighted more heavily than the former because the accessibility of public facilities mainly determines how well the population can engage in physical activity.
With regard to our sample, please note that “city” refers to city proper and excludes surrounding metro areas.
Next, we compiled 24 relevant metrics, which are listed below with their corresponding weights. Each metric was given a value between 0 and 100, wherein 100 is the best value for that metric and 0 is the worst. Data for metrics marked with an asterisk (*) were available only at the state level and therefore received only half a weight.
Finally, we calculated the overall score for each city and ranked them using the weighted average across all metrics.

Budget & Participation – Total Points: 30

  • Average Monthly Fitness-Club Fee: Double Weight (~7.06 Points)
  • Average Bowling Cost: Half Weight (~1.76 Points)
  • Average Cost of Playing Squash: Half* Weight (~1.76 Points)
  • Average Tennis Court Rent (for one hour during the weekend): Half Weight (~1.76 Points)
  • Number of Sporting-Goods Stores per 100,000 Residents: Full Weight (~3.53 Points)
  • Number of Sports Clubs per 100,000 Residents: Full Weight (~3.53 Points)
  • Percentage of Residents Who Engage in Any Physical Activity: Full Weight (~3.53 Points)
  • Number of Little Leagues per 1,000,000 Residents: Full Weight (~3.53 Points)
  • Pick-Up Soccer Meetups per 1,000,000 Residents: Full Weight (~3.53 Points)

Sports Facilities & Outdoor Environment – Total Points: 70

  • Number of Swimming Pools per 1,000,000 Residents: Full Weight (~4.83 Points)
  • Number of Basketball Hoops per 100,000 Residents: Full Weight (~4.83 Points)
  • Number of Tennis Courts per 100,000 Residents: Full Weight (~4.83 Points)
  • Number of Public Golf Courses per 1,000,000 Residents: Full Weight (~4.83 Points)
  • Number of Baseball Diamonds per 100,000 Residents: Full Weight (~4.83 Points)
  • Number of Ice-Skating Rinks per 1,000,000 Residents: Full Weight (~4.83 Points)
  • Number of Skateboard Parks per 1,000,000 Residents: Full Weight (~4.83 Points)
  • Bike Score: Full Weight (~4.83 Points)
  • Number of Bike Rental Facilities per 1,000,000 Residents: Half Weight (~2.41 Points)
  • Walk Score: Full Weight (~4.83 Points)
  • Number of Fitness Centers per 100,000 Residents: Full Weight (~4.83 Points)
  • Number of Fitness Trainers & Aerobics Instructors per 100,000 Residents: Full Weight (~4.83 Points)
  • Number of Park Playgrounds per 100,000 Residents: Full Weight (~4.83 Points)
  • Number of Parkland Acres per 1,000 Residents: Full Weight (~4.83 Points)
  • WalletHub “Weather” Ranking: Full Weight (~4.83 Points)"

And yet  Laredo, Texas which came in at 100 on the scale still had a “Budget & Participation” Rank of 93 and a “Sports Facilities & Outdoor Environment” Rank of 100. How can that be? And what about Scottsdale, Arizona which came in #1 on the list with a “Budget & Participation” Rank of only 11 and a “Sports Facilities & Outdoor Environment” Rank of a measly 4. Does that mean these rankings are skewed? Rigged perhaps?

No, what it means is the one thing the News & Record and Greensboro's elected leaders would rather I not tell you. Your health has more to do with your income than the number of parks or fitness centers where you live.

In Laredo there are lots of public spaces and places where you can get lots of exercise and it never gets cold. But per capita income in Laredo is extremely low so people can't afford to stay healthy. And Scottsdale beats out Greensboro on most every WalletHub list that indicates folks in Scottsdale might have more money:

Education:

Most Caring.

Best and Worst Cities for Hispanic Entrepreneurs That's amazing considering that Scottsdale is almost all white and rich.

Amazingly, Scottsdale is smaller than Greensboro. The first time I saw Scottsdale it was smaller than Burlington. Scottsdale was "incorporated in 1951 with a population of 2000, the 2014 population of the city is estimated to be 230,512 according to the U.S. Census Bureau." I remember building cable television systems in Scottsdale before most of the houses were built when most of the city was still desert.

So why did Scottsdale grow over the course of the last 30 plus years while Greensboro died? And why won't the media tell you?

Joe Killian And The Dark Money Trail: Epilogue

Recently, in his story, The Tinfoil Hat Brigade, Fec pointed me to an above the fold, front page story in the Greensboro News & Record in which journalist Joe Killian accused local bloggers of making up stories that Greensboro Mayor Nancy Barakat "Grasshopper" Vaughan attempted to have her political rivals killed in the lead up to the election.

Nothing could be farther from the truth.

Killian's story, And the "Scoopy" goes to .... makes the following claim:

"The rumor — stoked by local bloggers and quietly encouraged by competitors: Vaughan tried to have her political opponents killed."

Killian names no names as he hasn't the balls to do so. Naming names would give EzGreensboro.com even a bigger audience that we already have. But any Google search will eventually lead you back to the first article in this series titled, Why Is Joe Killian Of The News & Record Covering Up Devin King's Near Fatal Accident?  the first in my series, Joe Killian And The Dark Money Trail.

In his blog post  The Tinfoil Hat Brigade, Fec wrote:

"Using front page top of the fold positioning to impugn the local bloggers is more about protecting Killian’s reputation than the mayor’s. Killian is paid to commit yellow journalism, whereas Billy has published an enormous amount of content for over ten years without significant income.  Sure he’s over the top and often wrong, but the First Amendment guarantees that right.  And in a local environment where the media increasingly refrains from reporting important news, Billy’s blog has become required reading.

So, you have our local daily coming down hard on the bloggers for the perceived slight of one person.  Trust me, there a lot of people who have problems with Killian and some of them are elected officials."

And in that we have Fec giving us motive for Joe Killian, aka Joseph Fredrick Wilbur's story. We'll get back to motive later but for now let's go own with proving Killian the liar we know him to be.

Killian wrote:

"This year Vaughan faced two challengers for mayor — perennial losing candidate Sal Leone and newcomer Devin King. Both managed to get into serious car accidents during election season. Police investigations found both to be accidents with no implication of foul play."

Well actually, if you'll read the entire series I wrote you'll learn there was no police investigation of Devin King's accident. The so called investigating officer reported that Devin King was immediately rushed to the hospital and the officer never had the chance to question Mr King about what happened and according to Mr King no one from the Greensboro Police Department ever contacted him.

Another thing you will notice throughout my series is evidence-- real solid evidence like police reports, links to government documents, photographs, anything I can get my hands on. What kind of evidence does Joe Killian, ace reporter for the Greensboro News & Record give you in his fairy tales? Joe says so. As Fec wrote in Joe Killian Repairs His Reputation:

"It’s just great that Killian bought a homeless guy a sandwich, but that doesn’t really rise to the level of a story.  Fortunately, some neoliberal asshole showed up to save the day.

How convenient.

Killian has a rich history of accusations that his reporting is not completely factual.  Some city council members and county commissioners refuse to speak on the record with him due to these incidents.

I’ve watched Portlandia and know pretty well how Killian thinks.   He wouldn’t be able to hold his head up in any of Greensboro’s tragically hip haunts without somehow repairing his reputation.  But it’s not like the N&R was going to spend paper and ink to actually refute the damning account in the Rhino.  No, something else was required and fast."

Oh wow, I think I just came back to that motive thing. And before I intended to.  Oh well, shit happens if you eat regular.

Killian continues:

"But the local Tinfoil Hat Brigade spun out tall tales that had Vaughan — who ultimately took a staggering 87 percent of the vote — putting out hits on her far-behind challengers like a mafia queenpin."

Again, not once throughout the entire series Joe Killian And The Dark Money Trail did I or any other blogger accuse the Grasshopper of attempting to murder anyone. Go ahead, read the entire series for yourself and you will find that despite the fact that I asked many questions the only accusations made were made against Joe Killian and the Greensboro police department.

Damn Fec, the more I think about it the more I think you're right, Killian must be doing it to save his reputation. When his wife Amanda was covering local politics we local bloggers simply accused her of not being bright enough to know to ask the right questions but we've all acknowledged Joe Killian to be a smart and capable investigative journalist who just isn't doing his job. Being painted as a dumb bimbo doesn't stop someone from getting a big buck job with a company like RLF Communications which is siphoning off tons of Greensboro taxpayer dollars but if a reporter gets branded as corrupt even the dark side of media won't hire him.

Joe Killian finished his tall tale with:

"She hired someone to crash the cars, the stories went. Or to tamper with the cars, in order to make them crash. She bribed or intimidated the police into declaring them accidents.

Occasionally, truth is stranger than fiction. This one, though, was science fiction."

But the thing is: nowhere in our series Joe Killian And The Dark Money Trail did we ever say those things. Joe made all that up just like he makes up the rest of what he writes in the Greensboro News & Record.

Now I'm going to tell you part of what we left out of the original series.

It is my belief that Joe Killian refused to cover Devin King's accident because our local political establishment feared a sympathy vote and rumor inspired votes might push Devin King above Mayor Vaughan in the final polling.

Why did Mayor Grasshopper feel the need to speak directly to Mr King and tell him she did not try to have him killed if no one reads this blog?

While the series seemed to look to Mayor Vaughan and Marty Kotis as possible suspects there was a 3rd suspect who Devin King, myself and others asked the Greensboro Police Department to investigate as the possible attacker of Devin King. GPD never responded to requests by Mr King, myself or others I've talked with.

Pay attention, look at how much time passes before the rear bumper cover is finally found. For weeks I repeatedly e-mailed the Greensboro Police Department asking them to produce the bumper cover and they never once replied to my e-mails. They didn't reply to Devin King either.

Did you notice the insurance investigator finally showed up to look for a lost bumper cover 25 days later? As you can see in the photograph they found one too. Now if nothing else this proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that Joe Killian lied when he wrote:

" Police investigations found both to be accidents with no implication of foul play."

Joe Killian, you have got to be just about the dumbest son-of-a-bitch I have ever encountered. It wasn't enough that I proved you a flat out liar in the original series, you were stupid enough to make up even more lies that were too easily proven false.

Now let's take a look at Mr King's car after the bumper cover was "found" 25 days later. I can't prove Devin King's "accident" was intentional and I can't prove our suspect did it if it was intentional but I have repeatedly proven Joe Killian a liar and what you see in this photograph and the conversation that follows is going to make you question the Greensboro Police Department even further.

Study that picture. Be sure to look closely at the spare tire and wheel laying on top of the "found" bumper cover. Any of these photos and screen grabs can be enlarged by clicking on them.

So maybe that's Devin King's spare tire and bumper cover or maybe it isn't. Mr King says it's not his tire.

Maybe Devin King was the only driver involved or maybe there was a second driver involved. We've certainly proved Joe Killian was lying when he said Greensboro Police investigated.

Why even Roch Smith Jr e-mailed Joe Killian saying:

"[A]ttributing to nobody in particular and a group in general the facetious ramblings of a single person with a self-admitted mental disorder is shameful, even if it is a good way to marginalize bloggers with a sweeping generalization.
Kudos. You must be proud."

Who knows, maybe Joe Killian just helped to repair a long standing rift and begin a rebuilding of the local blogosphere. If so you can take this for gospel: That is the last thing in the world Greensboro Mayor Nancy Barakat "Grasshopper" Vaughan and the rest of the Greensboro City Council ever wanted to see happen.

And while it may be that I'm the one with the "self-admitted mental disorder" anyone who takes the time to thoroughly read the entire series, Joe Killian And The Dark Money Trail will know it was Joe Killian,  aka Joseph Fredrick Wilbur and not Billy Jones who lied.

And folks, the only way to fight a dishonest media is by sharing stories like this one. Please share.

Susan Ladd Demonstrates Complete Incompidence

In Susan Ladd's article, Investing in East Greensboro she writes:

"The Greensboro City Council, criticized during its redistricting battle for not being business-friendly, signed off Tuesday night on incentive plans that could bring a handful of businesses to the most disadvantaged part of town, including one that could turn that area of the city into a major attraction.
The first was a $387,500 incentive for Natty Greene’s. The move of the brewery’s production facility to Revolution Mill has many benefits. This keeps Natty Greene’s in Greensboro, where it was founded and where it grew to the third-largest homegrown brewery in the state."

And she also writes:

"Two other companies applied for incentives under that program on Tuesday. Ecolab, which is already established in East Greensboro, is planning a $27 million expansion that would bring 35 new manufacturing jobs. NFI National Distribution Centers plans to invest $4 million in a distribution facility that will bring 80 new jobs. Best of all, NFI would lease the former K-mart facility off East Wendover, which was the second-largest distribution center in Greensboro before it closed earlier this year.

These projects could bring a combined investment of $145 million to East Greensboro."

To which I replied:

"East Greensboro, my big old hairy butt! Revolution Mill is 3 blocks from Irving Park in North Greensboro. The $11 Million Dollar Ecolab expansion is located at 8300 Capital Dr, Greensboro, NC 27409. That's West Greensboro, Ms Ladd: https://goo.gl/maps/fjcFiXwHzxM2

So it looks like your $145 Million Dollar east Greensboro investment figure is really only $4 Million Dollars. And lest we forget the multi-million dollar county incentive package that went into building the K-mart Distribution Center that is now being reused by NFI National Distribution Centers.

If you're going to continue writing propaganda the least you could do is learn to use Google maps as it would save you from looking so foolish in front of what will soon be hundreds if not thousands of online readers."

You see, while Susan Ladd is reporting a $27 Million Dollar expansion for Ecolab in Greensboro, all the rest of the media is reporting an $11 Million Dollar expansion.  And she made no mention of the fact that the old Kmart Distribution Center site is actually receiving incentives for a second time, first Guilford County and now the City of Greensboro.

It doesn't get any more incompetent than that.

And folks, please share.

Where will the money be invested, and at what cost?

———— funds will be invested and managed by the two community foundations. Fees will be normal and customary,

What will the salaries be of Say Yes Guilford employees?

———— there are twi components to the organization — a 501c3 that will do the fundraising and management. This is a volunteer program thus far except for one administrative assistant. The Say Yes guilford staff is hired by the Say Yes Foundation of New York. I am not sure that their salaries are released but you will have to ask them about that.

What percentage of the total amount will be directly given to students each year?

———— there will be a normal endowment distribution.

What are your expected yearly fundraising costs?

———— undetermined

What will the money be invested in?

———— will be managed professionally

Is Say Yes Guilford to be considered a fiduciary?

———— you will have to ask the Say Yes national folks about this. The local organization will be a 501c3

Will the investment manager be considered a fiduciary?

——— investment managers will be professionals who are in this business.

tell you what. I am not going to try answer all of these questions. George Weiss has his own foundation and I have no idea how much money he puts in it or how much he pays people or who his investment managers are. Frankly it is none of my business.

I would suggest you contact the Say Yes Foundation in New York or Hartford CT with those questions. I am working on securing funds to provide scholarships to supplement services for deserving students in guilford county.

"New Say Yes to Education partnership means free college tuition for Guilford County students

Guilford County was selected as a Say Yes to Education community
in a move that will provide county public school graduates
with the opportunity for college scholarships by spring 2016.

Triad Business Journal's Reporter Katie Arcieri

Thousands of students in Guilford County Schools could now receive a free college education, regardless of how much money their parents are making.

On Thursday officials announced that Guilford County Schools was chosen as a partner community for non-profit "Say Yes to Education."

Say Yes provides free tuition to GCS graduates to any in-state public college or university, as long as the student has spent at least a few years in the GCS system. The funds will be available by spring 2016, meaning current seniors in high school are eligible.

...Say Yes commits to meet 100 percent of the public, in-state college cost not already covered by federal or state aid...

...GCS is the third Say Yes community nationally, behind Buffalo and Syracuse, N.Y.

Not true

...More than 40 individuals, couples, foundations and businesses raised $32.5 million to contribute to the Say Yes scholarship fund for GCS students. Officials hope to raise a total of $70 million.

Suckers

...Say Yes understands that there can be barriers to college other than financial ones. So, Say Yes also includes support services for students like tutoring, health services and after school programs."

Say Yes to Education, a nonprofit organization with a proven record of success, is offering our community $15 million and the expertise to set up a program that provides services to help prepare students for college and the money to help them go. That is, last-dollar scholarships — full tuition after grants and financial aid — for every graduate of Guilford County Schools.

...The city of Greensboro, the Guilford County school board and the city of High Point all committed to get involved in the program.

...Say Yes to Education is a public-private partnership that started in Philadelphia and now operates in Buffalo and Syracuse, N.Y...

As a parent of two students in Guilford County Schools and a Guilford County taxpayer, I was appalled at the treatment county commissioners gave to community leaders who have invested so much time, energy and leadership in this process and to representatives of Say Yes, who have invested more than $1 million in our community to make this program happen.

...Greensboro appointed Assistant City Manager Mary Vigue to lead the committee.

Who just got the job at Say Yes Guilford

No conflict of interest?

...Since the commissioners have been loath to use more taxpayer dollars to improve schools, they should be thrilled that the private sector is offering help.

...Say Yes is not asking the county to commit a dime at this point.

The first order of business is to make sure that existing funds are used more effectively and that services are not being duplicated among the many stakeholders, which include the city, county, community groups, faith-based organizations, businesses, colleges and universities.

Who just got rolled like doughnuts

One of the things that makes this program so strong is that it goes beyond offering scholarship money to making sure high school graduates can take advantage of that money.

They are going to make a lot of money on the side

...Guilford County Schools has undergone a thorough financial review, and Say Yes hired Johns Hopkins University to conduct a three-month analysis of the school system’s use of Title 1 federal money.

...reversing course now to include them in the initial rollout will delay implementation of this program — which was on target to benefit the Class of 2016 — and could kill it outright.

An economic plus

And this is not just about schools. Say Yes could be transformative in raising the profile of the city and county and ensuring its economic well-being.

Improved schools and affordable access to college creates a far more attractive community for businesses and industries looking for new locations. That benefits property values and the area’s overall tax base.

In Buffalo, real estate companies add it to their “For Sale” signs: “We’re a Say Yes Community.”

If that doesn’t demonstrate the link between education and economic development, I don’t know what does.

As public dollars shrink on the state and local levels, public-private partnerships like these are crucial to maintaining high quality schools and stocking the workforce with people who have a post-secondary education.

...The Guilford County commissioners should feel the wrath of every taxpayer in the county for trying to block this program.

Every public school parent and anyone who cares about the economic well-being of our community should call, write and attend meetings to tell the commissioners not to stand in the way of an opportunity that would benefit 83 percent of Guilford County students.

83%?

We should pledge ourselves to making this program work. Not with “I’ll think about it” or “if you do this.”

The answer should be an unequivocal “yes.”
