Leon Black, worth $9 Billion+ from $7.8 Billion last year, who took Greensboro, Guilford County and High Point for more than $1,000,000 in taxpayer funded handouts via Fresh Market, moved at least $50 million to Jeffrey Epstein

"Leon David Black (born 1951) is an American investor and art collector. He specializes in leveraged buyouts and private equity. He founded the private equity firm Apollo Global Management in 1990.

...Two months after the May 2012 anonymous purchase of one of four versions of Edvard Munch's The Scream, The Wall Street Journal reported that Black had been the one who had paid $119.9 million for the pastel, the highest price ever paid for a work of art at auction as of that time.

"The Fresh Market is not only likely getting help from the Guilford County taxpayers, but also from the Greensboro taxpayers who are Guilford County taxpayers as well.

The Greensboro City Council is holding a special-called joint meeting with the High Point City Council on Thursday, Nov. 21 at 12:30 p.m. at the Guilford Technical Community College Center for Advanced Manufacturing, 6012 Gate City Blvd.

At that meeting, the Greensboro City Council plans to consider an incentive not to exceed $301,000 based on the Fresh Market creating 53 new jobs and retaining 248 jobs with an average wage of $86,000 and a capital investment by the Fresh Market of about $2 million."

County Taxpayers May Help Grow Fresh Market

While the Guilford County Board of Commissioners hasn’t discussed the project publically, the board has scheduled a public hearing for its Thursday, Nov. 21 meeting, when the commissioners will listen to any pro and con arguments from citizens and then vote on a proposed incentives package for the upscale grocery store chain.

According to county documents, the proposal is “to appropriate and expend $106,000 in county funds to The Fresh Market, Inc. for the creation of 53 new jobs and retention of 248 positions at an average wage of $86,000.”

In the past 37 years, Fresh Market has grown to a chain of 160 stores in 22 states. In 2010, the company held an initial public offering raising $290 million and the stock began trading on Nasdaq.

I saw Robbie Perkins huddled with Marlene Sanford at the Council meeting Tuesday night, waiting for the vote to give Roy Carroll millions more on top of the $32 million he just got with the Tuggle Duggins's boys from the Triad Good Government PAC, which gave to 7 out of 9 City Council members last election cycle.

Yvonne Johnson didn't even know where the money came from.

I asked Robbie if he was going to be the real estate agent for the retail space the City/Roy was building into the deck taxpayers were paying for by the ballpark.

North Carolina Lockdown; Greensboro's started at 5pm last night (3/27/2020) and links etc...

After dark, not a car was seen on the road while walking the dog around the block.

Took a bike ride around again @ 10:30pm, everyone was home, cars parked.

Didn't see a car, didn't hear a traffic.

Calm as a Hindu cow, only different.

The bars are closed.

Movie theaters.

It will probably be (should be?) mandatory take out restaurant employees wear masks and gloves at some point.

A lot of freaked out people.

Like Wuhan, some folks around the New York area are fleeing elsewhere.  Hundreds of dead, lines at the hospitals and not enough ventilators.  Same thing happened in Italy before the lockdown of the whole country.  It's spreading via panic.

The Feds waived the 10% penalty for taking 401k and IRA money out, but it will still be taxable, meaning more than a few are going to liquidate investments to get the cash out.

We spent a good chunk of dinner prep time making Phyllo dough Ricotta pastries which we have never done etc..., like riding around the block on bikes at night.

It was great fun, but probably not something that would happen otherwise.

The way we live is going to change.

and are often more influenced by the things that seem than those that are.

Why Has Greensboro Become So Violent?

If you don't already know, Greensboro saw record murder rates in 2019 and people are wondering why. To get to the bottom of what breeds violence I decided to look into what breeds violence in other cities across the nation. Here are some of the things I learned.

From the Chicago Tribune in an article entitled, Why is there so much shooting and killing in Chicago?

“We are not just the most segregated city in America, but the level of concentrated poverty we have in our neighborhoods is unlike anything in Los Angeles or New York. You would not find an Englewood or Garfield Park anywhere in Los Angeles and New York.”

Next we go to The Hill with an article entitled, Violence is a symptom of poverty, not a cause:

"According to the most recent census data for Baltimore, the poverty rate is 24 percent. A quarter of a city that is 63 percent black. Of those people in poverty, only six percent will ever escape it in their lifetime. When you need to pay rent, or feed your family, or just find something to eat yourself, and there is nowhere else to turn, the poor turn to crime, and that usually means selling drugs.

The illegal drug trade is fueling most of the violence that’s occurring in the streets of Baltimore and in the streets of most other cities that face the same problem. There aren’t a lot of positive outcomes once you enter the drug game. Usually, it means prison, which is another of the main forces that drives poverty. If it’s hard to get a job coming from poverty, coming from prison it is almost impossible, and so to survive you return to selling drugs, and on and on it goes."

Now two articles certainly doesn't establish a trend so I went on to see what academics have to say about it and in this abstract from a study called Poverty and Violence it appears academia is in agreement that violence is a symptom of poverty:

"Poverty is widely believed to cause violence. The general public treats this notion as a truism, and most academics also accept it as such. Debates among the latter tend to be over which social mechanisms cause poverty to affect violence. But there are other positions to be sure. Poverty has been linked to violence in a number of ways. Most scholars as well as lay persons believe that those who live in poverty more frequently engage in acts of violence as a consequence of conditions that they are subjected to. There is, however, disagreement among scholars about which conditions are important and how and why they lead to violence. These conditions may include poor housing (Stark, 1987), distressed neighborhood (Krivo & Peterson, 1996), and disrupted families (Sampson & Groves, 1989). Living conditions of this sort are ordinarily defined as social structural consequences of poverty. While this structural approach has usually viewed poverty as the independent variable and violence as the dependent, some scholars have also argued that violence can cause poverty at the aggregate level by creating an unstable or dangerous environment which is not conducive to economic development or growth (Staley, 1992). It may also be that those who are financially better off will move out of areas with high rates of violence leaving only those who are economically unable to relocate (Wilson, 1996)."

So what are economic conditions like in Greensboro? Well let me just put it to you this way. The December 5, 2019 Scott Yost article in the Rhino Times, entitled Officials Charged Up Over New Battery Plant In East Greensboro, is tagged as Satire.

https://www.google.com/search?q=economy+in+greensboro+nc&source=lnms&tbm=nws&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjqhNTixsrmAhVBm-AKHdp_Bc8Q_AUoAnoECBEQBA&biw=1271&bih=872

And very poorly written satire at that.

So what is the Greensboro City Council doing about the poverty that is the root cause of the increasing violence in Greensboro?

Former Greensboro Police Chief Under Investigation

Authorities in South Carolina are investigating former Greensboro Police Chief Ken Miller for allegedly having  worked to dismiss a criminal charge for a wealthy businessman and covering it up. From the Greenville, South Carolina News:

"Greenville Police Chief Ken Miller and interim Capt. Jason Rampey have been placed on paid administrative leave after a State Law Enforcement Division investigation revealed evidence that they worked to dismiss a criminal charge for a wealthy businessman and were untruthful about it."

According to Matt Brown, Greensboro City Council, Kathy Manning and Walker Sanders, Comedian "Nate Bargatze", who will appear at the Tanger Center on Sunday, May 3, 2020, will sell 330 parking spots at $18 a piece to patrons before the performance

On December 19, 2017, Greensboro Coliseum Director Matt Brown, the City's highest paid employee, told City Council the Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts (STPAC) would be paid for in part by patrons paying $18 a piece for 330 VIP parking spaces 150 times per year.

The same math was sent by Brown to Kathy Manning, Co-Chair of the Development/Marketing Task Force and Chief Fundraiser for the Center, and Walker Sanders, president of The Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro.

Manning's husband Randall Kaplan, who served on the STPACs Economic Impact/Feasibility Task Force, is set to profit from the venture with a more than $30 million taxpayer funded parking deck under a new hotel down the street.

There were 488 free on street parking spots within 1,200 feet of the site, not counting the VF and the Marriott parking across the street, and another couple thousand in two more parking decks on the way.

The Bellemeade Deck across the street has 1,276 spaces

DPAC charges $5 per car in a similarly proximate deck.

Manning and Walker among others purposefully misled our community and have conspired against Greensboro's taxpayers for personal profit.

City Council voted to for this project knowing this information or should have, and/or willfully ignored data, violating their fiduciary duties to Greensboro's taxpayers, and should be removed from office.

Partners Ending Homelessness Isn't

Well in Guilford County they're not. As a matter of fact, despite the propaganda from Partners Ending Homelessness Executive director Brian Hahne:

You see, while using terms like 'chronically homeless' Mr Hahne is able to paint a pretty picture but the truth is something altogether different. Since Partners Ending Homelessness announced their plan to end homelessness in Guilford County within 10 years, back in 2007 the number of homeless children in Guilford County increased by 48% as of 2012.

From Fox8 linked above:

"As for why the numbers are going up, Darryl Kosciak with Partners Ending Homelessness said part of the reason is due to better counting practices."
Yeah, right. Here's Partners Ending Homelessness' own records from 2006 until 2011 as published in the News & Record. No improvement there.

But in that same article it was claimed they were making progress even as the numbers creeped higher. Even the title read, "Guilford’s homeless making progress".

Lies. Lies betting that you will read no more than the title and assume it to be truth.

Yes there was a recession but they still lied.

Meanwhile Spectrum News is reporting Homelessness On The Rise In Greensboro:

"The Interactive Resource Center says homelessness in Greensboro is at a crisis level.
The group says nearly 1,000 people go to sleep homeless each night.
Those people are finding shelter in cars, motels, and tents in the woods. They're asking for the city's help."

Partners Ending Homelessness states there were 586 people homeless as of January 2019. That's for the whole of Guilford County, Greensboro, High Point, and the rest of the county.

What does the Interactive Resource Center say?

"Every night in Greensboro, more than 900 people go to sleep homeless — in shelters, under bridges, in the woods or in cars."

And the IRC says a whole lot more like

"According to the National Coalition to End Homelessness, nearly half of all people experiencing homelessness are employed."

and

"In Greensboro, most panhandlers are not actually experiencing homelessness, which is why it is important to support an organization like the IRC that supports the people who truly need it."

Who do you believe?

In 2017 AmericaCorps reported that in Greensboro alone:

"On any given night, over 1,000 people will be living on the streets or shelters in Greensboro."

While in that same year Partners Ending Homelessness reported that Guilford County as a whole had 573 homeless people.

Now how is it that almost twice the area which included the other area had roughly half as many homeless people in the same year?

And folks, I only showed you a few instances in one city, in one county. The internet is full of counts published by non profits and government agencies alike that simply don't jibe with the year to year data published by Partners Ending Homelessness, which, by the way, is part of a nationwide public-private partnership operating in cities everywhere.

Bias In Greensboro Code Enforcement?

I should be outside getting some yard work done before it gets too hot but my mind weighs heavy knowing I have yet again stumbled upon, quite by accident, truths Greensboro residents should know.

On Tuesday I drove past 1222 Lombardy Street as I do several times a week. Only this time it was different. This time I dialed 373-CITY to complain about the fallen in roof and the truckloads of garbage that has been dumped there over the years since the roof fell in. I no longer have a working camera but I found this overhead view by using the Guilford County GIS website.

It looks far worse now than in the photo above.

The roof has been fallen in for several years with nothing done about it and I wondered if the City planned to demolish the property. I was told that the property is on the list to be demolished, that over 300 properties are on that list, no date has been set, and no funding has been set aside for those 300 demolitions.

And the first thing that came to mind was, there always seems to be funding to do demolitions in Glenwood on homes sought after by UNCG. Especially if those homes are owned by Bulent Bediz.

But not one of the demolished homes owned by Mr Bediz posed as much of a threat to public safety as the property at 1222 Lombardy Street. You can see the Greensboro Housing Authority owned Claremont Courts from the front porch at 1222 Lombardy. How many children might play there with the only remaining wooded area in the neighborhood being directly across the street?

But I didn't want to be the one to tell you about this.

You see, when I blog, despite any amount of evidence I might present, Greensboro's leaders make me out to be some sort of insane liar and most of Greensboro believes them. That's why I have severely curtailed my blogging activities.

So I decided to send my thoughts to others to see what they thought.

Roch Smith jr found my thoughts intriguing but is currently busy on paying projects. Hey, not everyone is retired like me. Some people have bills to pay. But Roch did take the time to forward my e-mail to Dr Stephen Stills who sent us the following:

But I had already called the city. So had others. The property is already on a list of 300 that isn't getting done.

I also sent my thoughts to Bulent Bediz who sent me the following reply:

"The funds used to demolish houses could well be spent  rehabbing them" Wow, I've seen the houses belonging to Mr Bediz that were torn down by the City. I also saw the bills they presented him for tearing them down. Many, if not all, could have been repaired for the cost of demolition.

Mr Bediz also sent me this recent article Guilford County closes in on Glenwood investor’s properties so I guess there's no need to share my concerns about code enforcement bias with Triad City Beat.

Funny thing though, the TCB article contradicts itself.

I found this statement to be especially telling. In it  Mitzi Griffin admits UNCG is the problem then goes on to blame Bulent Bediz:

"Griffin said that after UNCG bought up many of Bediz’s homes to make way for the new student recreation center in 2016, the value of most of the homes in the neighborhood dropped drastically. She claims hers went down to what it was when she bought it 30 years ago.

“He single-handedly took down this neighborhood,” Griffin said."

"...after UNCG bought up many of Bediz’s homes... the value of most of the homes in the neighborhood dropped drastically."

Meanwhile none of the homes that were owned by Mr Bediz and demolished by the City of Greensboro were in as bad of condition as this property at 1222 Lombardy St in East Greensboro where UNCG has no designs on taking the properties.

Intriguing? Roch has a nicer way of putting things than I do.

So what does it take to get a dangerous property torn down and hauled away when said property isn't a property that is desired by UNCG or one of Greensboro's connected developers? Why are there 300 properties waiting to be demolished and no funding to do so? Is there bias in the enforcement of the laws concerning public safety?

Or will the property at 1222 Lombardy actually have to kill children just as did the abandoned rock quarry that was once across the street did before the City of Greensboro will take action.

Update: June 28, 2019: If someone wants to visit 1222 Lombardy Street and photograph the property I'd be more than happy to add the photos to this post. Send them to RecycleBill@gmail.com and let me know if you wish for me to use your name or not.

The GHA Bedbug Cover-up

It was the following comment from a Facebook post that prompted me to post yesterday's article, When The Bedbugs Bite: Bite Back after 6:00 PM last night:

"They just forced a 93 year old woman to sign a repayment fee. Her neighbor passed away one month ago. Several weeks later they cleaned out the empty apartment (without pest control) . Now bedbugs have invaded the apartment next door the elders have to pay for it."

This morning I was blocked from Facebook for 3 days and given no means of appeal even though I wrote no profanity, nothing threatening, racist, no hate speech... I simply repeated what I was told by a reliable witness and backed it up with the assurance that I have seen the complaint against the Greensboro Housing Authority and Gateway Plaza Llc.

Now with your help I'm going to make them wish they had never attempted to silence me.

You see, for starters my story has already been shared by almost a dozen others. And to add insult to their injury, last night I searched the NC Secretary of State website for the entity, Gateway Plaza, Llc and discovered that no such entity exists here in North Carolina. Once again, the City of Greensboro is helping to funnel your tax dollars to non entities who don't pay taxes. I urge all who read this to search for yourselves then contact the Secretary of State.

I urge you to contact the News & Record, The Rhino Times, News 2, and Fox8.

And please make this story about the elderly and disabled people getting kicked out of their homes in Downtown Greensboro . Make it about tax fraud and not about Billy Jones.

When the People Speak, Council Should

From Roch Smith Jr in his article, A better way to improve City Council’s public forums:

"Public comments at city council meetings are not tempestuous simply because speakers and supporters are rambunctious by nature. It’s not a matter of football fans showing up instead of golf fans. Tumult arises when the response of council to a public concern is inadequate and people must, literally and figuratively, raise their voices. It has been that way for years.

Public comments at these forums don’t become heated just because people want to blow off steam. People come to these forums because they perceive a need for action and, history shows, the atmosphere gets raucous when elected officials side-step concerns and remain immune to facts brought to their attention."

When the people speak, Council should act. Listening alone isn't enough. Pretending to listen is even worse, sleeping through meetings is the worst kind of insult to the people they represent. And allowing it to continue for a decade or longer says they just don't care.

The original text I posted with that photo on Facebook in 2016 was taken from a City Council business meeting in which the City of Greensboro claimed no video was taken in response to several public information requests for videos from the meeting.

"Is that a video camera behind a sleeping Councilwoman Nancy Hoffman? And why does the City of Greensboro claim there was no video of that meeting?"

No further explanation was ever given.

It all comes back to bite....

A Recent E-Mail Concerning Kotis Properties

I still get some interesting e-mails from time to time. I'll not name the source but it is someone I trust and should be easy to verify:

"I had been meaning to mention . . . Two weeks ago the city started repaving a section of Battleground. Well, everyone has to start somewhere and they started in front of the Red Cinema on the side going toward downtown and paved to the office building before getting to the water plant. Once that was done, they all left - that apparently was all they were going to do . . . just that one side of the street, all lanes, from one end of Kotis' property at the Cinema to the other end at the office bldg. Something funny about this.

By the way, I am back and forth on this part of Battleground daily, many times more than once per day. Nothing was wrong with the street and there was no water waork, just paving."

Political favors or just by circumstance? You tell me. Are there no broken roads in Greensboro that needed paving first?

The Renaissance Community Co-op Is Owned By A Rich White Woman

No, I don't believe that but a lot of folks in East Greensboro do.

That's the rumor that was being spread by East Greensboro community leader, Reverend Gayland Oliver who maintains a business relationship with former Greensboro City Councilman Jim Key and is the founder of the community gardens project on Phillips Avenue in partnership with NC A&T University with 2 greenhouses already built and a third greenhouse planned.

Oliver knew better. He knows everyone involved with the founding of the RCC.

Could such lies have contributed to the downfall of the RCC which announced today it will be closing on January 25, 2019?

Have other local leaders, perhaps other local ministers also worked to turn people away from the RCC?

Why do those who lead us wish us to fail?

And why does the community keep covering for them?

Nikki Haley Resignation Has Ties To Greensboro

One of the people who was illegally flying Nikki Haley around was Jimmy Gibbs of Gibbs International. Greensboro residents will be interested to know that Mr Gibbs had dealings in Greensboro's White Oak Mill, presumably having bought the equipment from the mill.

But as is pointed out in Nolte v, Gibbs International. Jimmy Gibbs has a history of fraud and income tax evasion in which the Appeals court ruled against Mr Gibbs.

These things are never as straight forward and innocent as the politicians want you to believe.

What They Never Told You About Revolution Mill Flooding

Perhaps you heard of the recent flooding at Revolution Mills. Perhaps you even saw the report on WFMY 2 that the property is part of a 100 year flood plain. But old timers and residents of the mill village know the floods come much more often than every 100 years.

So if Billy Jones is telling the truth then the question becomes, how did Cone Mills manage to operate millions of dollars of equipment in a building that was so prone to flooding for over 100 years? The answer: They raised the floor.

Okay, so they didn't really raise the floor but they did build another floor above the basement floor thereby creating a crawlspace of sorts that the water could flow into and flow out, when the waters receded, keeping equipment, people, and electrical wiring high and dry. It was a simple solution that worked.

So why is the mill flooding now?

Simple really. That floor was built of very valuable old growth oak and pine beams 8 to 12 inches thick. Thousands upon thousands of board feed, hundreds of thousands of board feet were removed from the building by the original developer and sold-- money in his pocket-- all with the blessing of City of Greensboro Building Inspections and Planning Departments. All demolitions were approved.

Any time, anywhere up stream a new street is built, a new home is built, a driveway or parking lot is paved, the problems become bigger. The new entrance they are building for Print Works on Textile Drive and the improvements to the parking lots at Print Works will only make the problem bigger. The housing development they built behind Print Works a few years back only added to the problem.

Some of the problem could be alleviated by paving parking lots and drive ways with TurfStone made right here in Greensboro by Goria Concrete/Oldcastle. Of course then parking lots must be mowed but it beats flooding. Back in the day I must have delivered a million of those blocks to Smith Mountain Lake where they were used for driveways and boat landings. Wonder why no one thought of Turfstone for the Revolution Mill parking lots?

I guess a giant dry well could be built to catch the excess water. Then after the waters recede the water could be pumped out of the well and into the streams with giant pumps. Sounds really expensive doesn't it? Is there anything down there that can be mined? And what if you hit water on the way down?

The creek could be widened to allowed it to flow several times more water. But that probably should have been done before they built the new parking lots. Don't you think?

I wonder if the folks at Self Help Credit Union know that floor was removed by the previous developer? I wonder if the tenants know that floor was removed by the previous developer? I wonder if their insurance companies know that floor was removed by the previous developer in a plan approved by the City of Greensboro?

Well you can be sure they'll soon know all about it.

Amy Murphy: Let The Record State

I read Amy Murphy: Which path will we take on homelessness? in the Greensboro News & Record today and a few things struck me as rather strange. One was a quote she attributed to John Lomax. So I submitted the following public information request #8501 to the City of Greensboro just minutes ago:

"In the following article in the Greensboro News & Record, Amy Murphy quotes John Lomax as writing:

“So I started telling them no when they asked for money. That’s when the verbal and sometimes physical intimidation would happen. When my sons were not with me and a panhandler would get aggressive, I would immediately call the police and follow that person until the police arrived. I am guessing I have called the police 40-50 times over the years, but only for the ones who were being abusive."

https://www.greensboro.com/opinion/columns/amy-murphy-which-path-will-we-take-on-homelessness/article_7e605dd0-9fae-59ff-b2aa-4955a53bf701.html

Please send me ALL the records of John Lomax's calls to Greensboro Police concerning abusive panhandlers.

Thank you
-Billy Jones

PS. I've also posted a copy of this PIRT online at: http://greensboroperformingarts.blogspot.com/2018/07/amy-murphy-let-record-state.html I highly recommend you read it and forward the article to the respective departments.

I don't know about you but 40-50 times seems like a lot of calls, perhaps a gross exaggeration. And then there's the part where Mr Lomax is said to have written:

“So I started telling them no when they asked for money. That’s when the verbal and sometimes physical intimidation would happen."

Have any of you seen John Lomax? The man is huge! Not the sort of man that most men would attempt to intimidate.

So the sooner the City of Greensboro clears this up the better off everyone will be.
